I wouldn’t be fooled by the fact that the information can only be vied by senior officers, as they will probably be the control authorities within their organisations, and can give any one in there organisation, with a good reason, permission to access the information.

Speaking from experience, this is how it works at the moment, but were unable to use existing powers for secure online information. The really scary thing is the fact that we do so much on the net and tend to be open in our actions and personal thought that our lives are an open book to any one with the necessary skills, who has been given these powers.

As pyro indirectly says, this is not a big change.

Somewhat bizarrely, it's a load of fuss in the press about what will allow this information (which the UK government already have access to) to be used in non terrorist cases and that is not the point at all.

Basically, they are responding to apple being awkward in a previous case and ensuring it doesn't happen again in a terrorist case and the fallout is we now know they can read all our records (which they already could) and can now prosecute us (which was previously dodgy) based on that info.

If I wanted to research making a nuclear bomb etc, I'd still use a tablet on starbucks wi-fi, so nothing has changed. They can still see who I phone from home or on my logged to me mobile, just as before. If they are stuck, they will ask Rupert Murdoch to find out what they missed.

You sum up my take on this Curmudgeon.
The state, big business and hackers have had access to our data for years.
They will only act on it if a threat is percieved, or lots of money be made. 8)

Agreed Robert.

If I'm a huge risk to the world at large (which I am not), it's nothing new. I am no more crazy than I used to be when Trump had darker hair and had not yet said he was tempted to shag his daughter.

A small piece of legislation with a big kick.

This Act looks like a tool to formalise what already is going on. At present information found in this manner generally could not be used in court, but is used to indicate where to find admissible evidence, where as when this bill comes into play, information found can be used to formulate charges.

Penetration testers have been around for at least 2 decades, these people are so highly trained and certified, they can do amazing things on the web.
