Postby jimid » Fri Jun 10, 2016 12:50 am

Approximately how much liquor can i expect to get on a 4l run.
I used 7kg dextrose in 25l water
first 50ml or so is tossed out.
When the tails are save to add to another run how is this a good thing

Thanks

May be so bold, 7kg in 25 is too much. You would be much better with 5kg granulated. It will finish quicker, less stressed and easier. :)

Thanks fo the tip. I will try that next time.
Being a new guy at it, it is difficult since there is so many different ways to make your beverage. Tips are always appreciated.
Still have no snawer for my original question.

As you pose the question, there is no definitive answer.

On the brief information you give, one could estimate that your initial fermentation, allowing that you have totally used up all sugars, would be in the region of 17% abv. You give no hydrometer readings to judge by.

This could mean that each 4 litre charge could be carrying roughly .68 litres 100% alcohol.

However, you don't mention what you want to make, and what runs you intend to do, Strip or Spirit run and will you be discarding Fores and cutting for Heads, Hearts and Tails. The cut off for a neutral product would probably be earlier that that for a flavoured product.

All this would markedly effect how much alcohol you realise from 4 litre Strip runs followed by 4 litre Spirit runs.

The Heads and Tails, due to smearing across the run, carry a significant amount of ethanol. You extract this by adding the Feints to the results of your next Stripping runs.

Thanks for the info. New guy mistake. not giving enough info.
Your answers give me more questions to ask. For now I will do more
reading on the hobby, and try to ask more information in the question.

Thanks again

+1 with Toper.....the amount of ethanol in a wash is based on the ABV % that the wash finished out at.

If you have two wash's one at 8% ABV and one at 12% there will be more likker in the last one for you to extract than the first one.

I've had a wash not long ago that finished out at about 7%.....for whatever reason...but you just carry on and strip it.

Thank you Toper and Ice, I saw this last night just before I turned in.
You have saved me the effort of constructing a reply due the qualities of yours.
And to credit Mash, yes it is easy to over-sugar a wash, these days I myself worry less about "over-stressing" yeast ,than over sugaring. I believe these are not necessarily the same topic, but that is another thread, maybe someday...
And a big welcome to jimid, much to read on here, most of it helpful :)
