vodka star versus ss turbo

Hi all again, just got a quick question about these 2 yeasts.

reading some of the posts people are getting approx 14% after fermentation with VS if i strip and do the heads ,tails runs etc using my airstill would i still get spirit at approx 75-80% as i do with SS Turbo?

My SS Turbo fermentation usually comes out at approx 23-25%.

It is the second (spirit) run that will dictate the final ABV.

After the first run, regardless of type, you will be diluting the strip to 40%. So both types will be starting the second run from the same point and both will end up the same %ABV.

You will of course get different quantities.

thanks YHB. although i'm using mozr method and getting the same amount as per the instructions but with SS turbo yeast my wash is 23-25%. should i be getting more from this method qty wise?

The higher the initial strength of the wash, the higher the % of the stripped product will be, quantity wise there will probably not be that much difference.

However, when you dilute both products back down to 40%, you will have a lot more of the one with the stronger wash.

Why not forget about turbos and the like and just use Allinsons Baking Yeast. 64p per 125 grams at Sainsbury, Tesc and the like. Much, much cheaper.

whats the estimated total cost of yeast, tom paste etc to get this wash going, also what is the abv of fermented wash pls?

Tomato puree 48p,Yeast 32p you may want to add additional nutrients but they are only a few pence. So you should be able to do the whole lot for £1.0 - or £5.50 including the sugar (5 Kg)

I would expect to get around 11% ABV with 5kg of sugar, you can use more at the risk of a lower quality product.

Hey Guys you can get 5kgs of sugar at Tesco or Sainsbury for £3.98.
That + yeast and nutrients makes up for a whole lot cheaper than the turbo type yeast washes.

I use VS all the time often get 17% off a 7kg wash nice and clean plus Bob at brewonline on eBay does a very good deal on them often under £2.50
In mho it's worth an extra quid or so for that result

Hey Admiral not questioning your choice of VB here but have you tried any of the other simple sugar washes out there that use ordinary bread yeast. I think you would be pleasantly surprised how good they are.

For now I'm using Vodka Star which isn't a turbo despite what it says on the packet. Ellie Claire on the bay does 16 packets for £44 post free which = £2.75 a packet. Even with an airstill that's <£1.50 per litre of 40%vol.

well guy's got my first tom paste wash under way.....nice colour. bubbling away very nice indeed. will post results when it has finished fermenting.

total cost for 2 washes is less than £9 with sugar.
