How would you direct a home brew home movie for youtube?
I've been thinking about doing some YouTube High Def Home Brew movies/instructables.
What do you find frustrating about the current crop of brewing how-to's? What would you like to see?
It is important to have an intro, trailer, credits, etc - or is it better to keep it more basic?
For me, I hate music over the whole show and excessive use of fawning presenter.
Your thoughts would be very welcome. Thanks.

Have a descriptive title so all who view know what they are going to be viewing.
Have a fixed camera, nothing worse than losing focus, or shaking.
Have decent video editing software to put it all together, lots of free ones out there.
Most important, don't drink too much of the product whilst making the video.

Always give the hardest job to the laziest person because they will always find the easiest way to do it.

when I was into lock picking I used to advertise the forum I was on at the beginning of the
video. then film the locks that I picked. then credits at the end saying summat like "this has been a Magn420 production brought to you for blah blah blah forum" you might need jimmys permission to advertise the forum

I would avoid spending too much time talking about sterilising and other basics, by all means mention them but many viewers will be already experienced to some degree and there's nothing worse than being tought to suck eggs.
Perhaps make a clearly titled video aimed directly at noobs where you can go over all the very basic stuff and just refer to it or something, that way you can get on with the interesting topic in hand.

My tuppenceworth;
Keep it simple, the video equivalent of bullet points.
Skip the music and strive for crystal clear audio,or none.
Agreeing with all of VT's points.
Learnt a little more about Magnu420 tonight! Might have some of your stuff stowed on a hard drive somewhere...
As it seems Voddy is talking about YouTube vids,to be posted there,no problems with permissions from this site.Unless he states the upload is FROM this site.
I am sure Jimmy would also be happy to host links to such videos, there is no copyright issue.
Anavrin has it too, with don't be boring.
Lots of stuff can put on screen at once using info boxes(or whatever they are really called),to be disregarded,or recalled if the item appeals to the viewer.
Best of luck with your project.
Robert.

Maybe we should have a Still Smart competition to see who can do the best "sugar wash" how to video!!!
It would be a laugh at least, if you have your still in the background, your allowed to wear a Franklen D Roseveld mask!

Thank you all *very much* indeed for your input.
I will be continuously re-reading your comments as they are all valuable.
I have a few ideas - and so I will be doing a few test screen shots to see how this works - along with video editing software - then I'll go for a more advanced tute.
Many thanks again to all.

Have a look at these videos made by Stephenkentucky, a member here (although he hasn't been here for some time) and owner of the Modern Distiller site and forum.
Don't be put off by the apparently odd soundtrack at the start of the videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xptvVFoZ_pE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY15-dG_ ... e=youtu.be
These were both hailed as groundbreaking when he released them. Stephen is now a licensed distiller in Aus.

p.s. also forgive Stephen's pronunciation of Islay in the first video. He set it's right in the second installment.

Stephenkentucky's videos were not that well made, regarded in modern world stuff,(whilst containing lot's of good info),but I have total respect in what he was doing back then, and I am glad to hear that he has found a home/market for his passion, and wish him well, with more than a few thanks.

You guys are amazing.
A MAJOR THANK YOU.
Not only help, but links, too.
I just watched those videos above and am now much, much better placed to do my videos with added confidence, I must say.
Thank you again.

Glad we were able to help and I know Stephen would be chuffed if he thought his work had inspired someone else to do something similar but better.
As I said his videos were groundbreaking, very professional looking, and well made, as nobody else, me included, had the balls to do anything like that in this highly secretive, cloak & dagger hobby.
I'm already looking forward to a video from you.
