I've seen that before. There is a picture of an actual still that goes along with it. More equipment than I have room for, but the principals are solid.

Is that two thumpers in series? Doesn't make sense. Might if you had two or more boilers, preferably 4 supplying the first thumper and more than one low wine feeding the high wine thumper.

One of the main reasons for a stripping run is so you accumulate a quantity of low wine to work with raher than gallons of crap.

the first thumper marked low wines is tails from the previous run, watered down 1 to 1 with water, the second thumper is heads at 3 to 1. Its the traditional caribbean method that appletons use.

It produces a very heavily flavoured rum and not at all like your bacardi ambitions posted in another thread. If I was wanting to make a light bacardi style rum, I'd strip the wash, then run quicker than normal for neutral on a column. I'd add 10% wash to the boiler to boost the flavour a little, and maybe some treacle too.

I don't have room for a setup like this anyway Capt....much like Chill. I found the diagram by accident, a link, from a link, off another link, you know how it happens, I think the guy is in the Netherlands. I'll stick with my bacardi ambitions in the future, when I finished working on my beastie.. ;)

Once the run is over, what's left in the thumpers? Is it played out dunder by then so you dump it, or is there still obtainable alcohol in there, so you leave it until the next run? Or...?

Google "Dunder Pit"

That is a subject all on it's own.

Holy guacamole! It's the sausage making of distilling.http://www.artisan-distiller.net/phpBB3 ... f=5&t=2418

I think I'd have to dig a vomitorium next to it - just so I could get away fast. Thanks for the info.... I think.

I've done the dunder thing a couple of times when the weather was hot enough for a good... rot. It did not kill me and added some interesting tastes, but the sight of it... Not sure I am up for that again.

Dunder is left in the boiler (spent wash), you would run the still till there was no alcohol left, so the thumpers would be run to waste.

Talking of dunder....

Looks to be. You could skim that, add syrup, and have breakfast!
