Do you carbon filter?

Postby guest5234 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 9:04 pm

Notice on some youtube videos that on the final spirit run some filter through activated charcoal. Anyone do this and what benifits does it bring

As many answers to that as members on forums lol...

I have done so and think the difference is not noticeable, others will say different.. but one thing that is often mentioned is that the carbon will not be activated at more than 40% ABV so its just filtering the fine particles (if any) that are produced.

The rule of thumb might be as follows.......

If you use turbo yeasts, they often create some off flavours so carbon filtering is not such a bad idea.

If you use more natural recipes with baker's yeast, you make a much cleaner product to start with and do not need carbon filtering.

Or my way, which is make the best quality neutral you can, then carbon filter it anyway,

"perfection in a bottle!"

If I may say so myself :)

I'm with Anavrin on this one, make the best I can, then filter through an Essencia.
Always give the hardest job to the laziest person because they will always find the easiest way to do it.

in 8 years I have never filtered, well I say never, but I do put my product through coffee filters after ageing with toasted/charred oak sticks, to catch any little floaters.

Lacking the requisite number of brain cells to recall, if'n indeed you have ever informed us of your still or wash, I cannot comment on your own procedure.
We all invent/discover/take over or otherwise what works for ourselves.
I keep banging on that there is NO ONE way.
There are many.
Choose a safe one.

And yes, filtering through Kitchen towel, after aging on wood, catches the little bits.

Hi Squint

If aging on wood, then I assume you are not making neutral and probably wouldn't benefit from filtering with carbon anyway.

I've used my Essencia to filter aged Rum, I was trying to replicate the process used by Bacardi, they age all their Rum, then filter it though carbon to make it white in colour again.
