Spam !!!

To those who missed it, this forum was unnundated with a huge ammount of spam today.

To the person who must have spent a very long time clearing out all the crap, I thank you.

I saw the spam but as I was driving I couldn't do much.......the text of the spam was the same (I think.......from the quick look that I took) as the text of the stuff I deleted and banned the person last weekend.......

Dunno who sorted it but TVM as the phone signal isn't much, here just south of Melton Mowbray.....saves me struggling with signal/bandwidth and waiting for server responses. .......

Recent updates to common spamming software have led to severe shortcomings in the stock, image-based CAPTCHAs.

For anybody interested, Jimmy.
I implemented a mod to a forum Im involved in that all but stopped the spam.
stopforumspam_1_0_5 and here is how it works, and work it does:

1. A registration attempt is made on your forum.
2. We query the SFS database to see if the username, email and IP address matches any known spammers.
3. We calculate a score based on the number of spam reports for each of those three values
4. Block the registration attempt if the score exceeds a specified threshold
