When I say perish it shrivels up and dries out, this is because of some of the constituents of the rubber leaching into the alcohol.

I have seen a rubber ball suspended above some 95% in a sealed jar, it dried out and basically was crumbly, the plasticisers had gone somewhere, presumably into the spirits, I am not saying the rubber of that ball was the same as the rubber in your jar, but who knows.

If you want to use it then that is your call but I get a bit twitchy when I see people being told it is safe, when really we do not know. HD may be over the top but they are only thinking of you.

I am not disagreeing with you. Yes indeed - the rubber will eventually perish. It depends on how "long term" long term is.

The glass is always half full and at the same time half empty.
Half full...
I don't think [haven't investigated ] there has been any published negative information about rubber [but we all know it can have a funny taste ] and we have had it for years.
Also it would be fair to expect the one supplied with the jars is 'food safe'.

Half empty...
There is a big rush to use everything silicon - but we don't know about its long-term effects. History tells us everything that glitters is not gold.

At the end of the day you takes your chance I guess.

Alternatively if you are near a branch of T G Hughes a similar 8l glass jar with tap for under £10.

Same issues with the seals.

Mashy, my need to change them is probably from spending too much time on HDForums but are you happy to leave them on as long as they aren't in direct contact? Won't the vapour have any effect?

Just checked the sizes ..
jars seem to be 95 mm outside diameter
8l gin tank with tap seem to be 110 mm outside diameter.

... Another thing. I reckon the one supplied with the 8l IS SILICONE AS SUPPLIED.

How do you test it?
I have chewed it... Not rubbery.
Looked at it... Does not look like the rubber ones.
