Rum run with t500 reflux

Postby KerryW » Mon Feb 15, 2016 3:34 am

quick question
I like rum and have done a few using my little airstill, I have done a few TPW on the new to me T500 Reflux and am wondering of i need to do a stripping run when i do a brown sugar wash
I used a modified TPW using brown sugar instead of white cane sugar,
I ran it out in 400 ml jars and got a nice flavour,,
do i need to do a spirit run?
All roads lead to rum!!

Yes. Stripping run is about getting the concentration up by removing the bulk of the water. The spirit run is about pulling out the best bit, but removing the heads and tails.

Type of still is pretty much irrelevant (continuous excepted )

If you like the taste of it then that's your answer mate :-). If you can get some reflux happening and get the abv up and do good cuts, you should be able to do one run.it might be a lite rum with just brown sugar though.

Hi KerryW

If you ran it straight from a wash with plenty of reflux I guess you could quite easily find a nice clean cut in the middle, the benefit of stripping, as you probably know, lets you combine several washes for a bigger clean hearts cut, but stripping using the T500 column probably isn't as ideal as using a pot head.

Many people think you loose too much of the flavour you want to keep by stripping with a reflux column, in theory, you can still strip with it but most of the flavours will be compressed into start and end of the run so you need to ensure you collect as much as you can, the other benefit of a pot head is it'll strip your wash much quicker as you can push the power more without using any reflux.
