Essentia filter VERY slow

Filtering spirits after distillation

Essentia filter VERY slow

Postby mikew41 » Sat Mar 14, 2015 9:20 pm

After setting up my new shiny Essentia filter (correctly I hope) as per instructions I put my first 2 x 2L batches of spirit run in the top. The advertised flow rate is 500ml per hour. 36 hours later I have collected 1.2L, with 2.8L (presumably) still sat in the top part. Any ideas what I've done wrong?

Try taking the filters out and give them a shake, might not do much for the ceramic one but the carbon one might benefit if it's packed too tightly causing a restriction in the flow, another test would be to remove the carbon filter, leaving only the ceramic one installed, then see if it filters any quicker, if it's still slow, you know it's your ceramic one, if it's faster you know it's the carbon one slowing it down.

Also the 500ml/hr is when the top is full, it does slow down as it empties into the bottom, also the bottom is much smaller than the top, if you don't keep collecting it and it fills up, it stops the rest of the spirt from coming though, hope this helps.

When I used that fitler I was lucky to get a 1L in 24h, slow but the results were good. As far as I know longer contact is better - as long as your not in a hurry the neck the lot :D

Thanks guys...I only bought it as the Still Spirit filter was a pain in the neck...and I was after something a bit faster. I'll try your suggestions.

It's not fast, I always leave it overnight and it can take a few days to all come through, but you can't argue with the results, it's extremely good at it's job :)

I'll agree with those that responded first.
It is not as fast as claimed.
I have had problems, between uses, with semi- airlocks.
But not from Fresh fill, first uses.
Leaving the tap open, running into a collection vessel and the top chamber full will give the fastest through flow results

Just to say that tonight I finally poured more distillate into my Essencia, having left it "empty" for possibly three weeks, maybe five.
It is coming through at around 500ml/hour.
Contrary to popular opinion,I do not consume at that rate,so it is fast enough for me!
