first spirit run

Postby Magnu420 » Thu Oct 11, 2012 7:58 pm

ok guys i did my first spirit run this morning/afternoon mixed feelings about it :( , on the stripping run i ended up with just over 1 ltr short for the 6th of the last run of that batch which i topped up with water to get 4ltr,after the stripped run i measured the abv it was about 48%,two demijohns with 2.700ml and a third demijohn with 2.05ml,anyway i topped up the first demi with water (about 1.62ltr) down to 30% using hd calc, shook it up good style and then put into the airstill and it was just below the 4ltr mark,so i topped up with the third demi
started run

50ml as fores
250ml as heads
1000ml as hearts
100ml as pre hearts
100ml as pre hearts/tails ?
100ml as tails
100ml as tails
100ml as tails
100ml as tails
100ml as tails

4 hours and 20min run time,i probably could of gone on more but the last 100ml
was dripping slowly (i need to make meself a parrot) so i put the hydrometer
into the 1000ml which was in a jug and it was touching bottom :( but :)(cos i knew it was more then 48% cos that never touch bottom)

i cant smell any off it cos im come down with a cold and blocked me nose up but tasted the 1000ml and wow it tasted strong, put a couple more drops into the teaspoon again and lit it,and it was a blue flame

i left it covered up with kitchen paper the heads, hearts, tails to let the 'angels have their share' will ask the missis to smell and taste in mid afternoon tommorrow (then its been 24 hours of airing)then il will water it down to 40% and put some tennesee bourbon in,then hopefully termoz night me and the missis should be drinking it woohoo

will do the second demijohn tomorrow (when i get me jars back from the angels lol)

so like i said ive mixed feelings,a bit unhappy cos i never used 7kg of sugar only used 6kg,and expecting a bit more wash and abv of the wash, but apart from that the outcome was fulfilling and a learning curve but i know when i do another wash il use 7kg and a bit more water (we all learn by our mistakes)

Congratulations - Enjoy the drink you deserve it.

It does not sound like a mistake to me.

also il be having another spirit run termoz then the first batch is finished (im gonna put the distilate into a demijohn at 40%)
il be getting another wash going on tues this time il use 7kg sugar instead of 6kg,will let you know the outcome
