Peated Malt HELP
Having used the last of the Bairds peated malt with very encouraging results I tried to order some more from Worcester hop shop only to be told they can't get it any more
>:(
No explanation as bairds definitely produce for one or more of the Islay distilleries
Anybody got any ideas where I could get some more from ?
Or does anyone know somebody who works at one of the hallowed Islay producers
That would make a good excuse for a weekend away !

Re: Peated Malt HELP
I doubt that is the same stuff they use at the distilleries, I suspect theirs will be many many times more peaty.
I'm sure bairds will still malt to particular distilleries specification, it sounds as if its just the comparatively lightly peated stuff for the beer guys that they are no longer bothering with.
That is a bit of a bummer, I would have liked to give it a go at some point.

Re: Peated Malt HELP
Thanks for that Optic
I've been in touch and he says he can do 25kg sacks so waiting on more info about it and costs (because the site price is about 3 times what I paid last time)
I'll also make some discrete enquiries through someone on Islay.
I'll keep you posted
Ironically there's 2 good suppliers of genuine Scottish heavily peated malt I found when browsing. Shame they are in the USA !

Re: Peated Malt HELP
For consideration (and maybe a contingency plan if sourcing 'readymade' is difficult again)
...its not too hard to buy some peat (and a good plain barley)and make a smoker and make your own peated grain.
You can do it much cheaper and 'play with' the peat level to your satisfaction too.
Really.... the hardest bit is getting the peat to 'catch alight' and/or trying to keep the smoke from annoying neighbours.

Re: Peated Malt HELP
good stuff AT, how long before you find yourself buying a large chuck drill to motorise things?
I tried getting my 8 year old to do it, but she just just have the stamina.
I've been having fun trying AG, the worst part is cleaning out the grain at the end. But its easily doable in an evening after work. I'm getting close to 80% brewhouse efficiency which is the magic numbers all the beer guys strive for.
I'm going for a grain vodka rather than a whisky, just so mine will be drinkable first

Well as it happens..... Expecting delivery of a big Dewalt 18v drill that was a freebee on a trade promotion got to be worth a try !
If that vodka works out would be interested in your recipe mate
I use fine weave grain bags from my HBS when mashing seems to work well and keep most of the grist in a fairly easy to handle lump

Re: Peated Malt HELP
Hi mate
Most recent one I did was approx 6kg of ground peated malt in approx 13 litres of water
Going to aim for a mashing temp of about 63 degrees Celsius for about an hour next time around as this apparently is the best temp for producing fermentable sugar
There's a good strike temperature calculator on this website along with other useful ones
http://www.brewheads.com/calc.php
After sparging I have been adding about 2kg of LME to lift the OG to about 1.080
I would like to use more grain and less LME but the gear I'm working with is not ideal
I've been using alcotec whisky yeast which is giving about 12% ABV
Thereafter a strip run using a power controller cos boy does it froth
then a slow spirit run with previous heads and tails added as per distillery practice with generous cuts going no lower than 60% ABV I find I collect 2 plus litres of tails with loads of flavour for the next run
Currently ageing for about 3 months plus in 5 or 10 litre oak casks previously recharged with some cheap cream sherry or port
Tasting so far is rather good in IMHO

Re: Peated Malt HELP
What you using as a mash tun, and how are you filtering the grain?
I'm using a 100qrt cool-box that I've injected with foam insulation to up the insulation. I've got a slotted copper manifold made from 15mm pipe.
Works a treat.
I'll do a write up once I've done my spirit run and can post all the results,

AT,
Thanks for the write-up. I use two 10 gallon round orange Rubbermaid coolers as a lautertun and a mashtun with a false bottom. I'd have to add extract for a heavy beer as well.
I'd like to upgrade; but, I'm waiting to win the lottery to buy a Braumeister.

Wow that brumeister kit looks the biz
I've just been using the T500 with a grain bag but it's threatening to get messy
So I've splashed out and ordered an insulated stainless steel one off this site
