Replacement glassware discovery

Postby Mash » Mon Apr 02, 2018 5:46 pm

We have in the past tried to find good replacement glassware for the smart / easy still at sensible money.

Well it was hiding right under our nose!

The flat green gin bottle. Fits a treat.

So many Gin bottles seem flat....
I suspect lots of sauce... :)

The bog standard cheapy from Aldi and I suspect a few others.

It's the flatness that allows the neck to get close to the output.

LOL.

Does make for very easy cuts if you have a few ::)

Serendipitous in a way because it is fast becoming a one bottle gin machine 8)

So if it’s becoming a one bottle gin machine, does that mean your setting it up using lower ABV low wines in a smaller charge?

Do tell, I heard using a 20% starting charge makes bottle at drinking strength :)

Can only speak for myself, but I cut off at 50%.
That may be wasteful ??? but I love the result :)

Its about that. I have to confess this happened by accident the first time but its repeatable and works a treat. Much further and the flavour coming out is undesirable. Quite artisan - done by taste not numbers.

I’m getting a little confused by this, so I have a question?

If I wanted to make one single 700ml bottle of of Gin on the Airstill and collect it all in a single flat sided bottle and it’s final ABV to be 45% without any proofing down, what volume of wash and at what percentage should a charge the still with, assuming I might bin the first 50ml to remove any juniper oils.

Next time I will work it out, using a refractometer.

I take the best for the gin.
I don't remove the first 50. IMO you lose too much flavour.
I don't aim for 45% I aim for taste (I know it will be 'in the region of'.
With a litre going in I appreciate there is a little waste, but that can go into my junkohol.

Guessing. I reckon it will be 1l @ 50%. Stopping earlier than a spirit run to keep the flavour cleaner / brighter.
