Grainfather as a T500 pot still

Postby Anavrin » Wed Aug 31, 2016 12:17 am

Just run the Grainfather with the standard T500 lid, plus the StillDragon adapter to go from the hole in the T500 top to a 2" tri-clamp fitting.

Enabling me to connect some of my SD tri-clamp stuff, I made a pot still setup using a 500mm straight pipe, then a 180° bend, followed by the big baby dephlagmator.

The big baby dephlagmator isn't designed to be a product condenser however it has 3x10mm pipes in parallel so it's equivalent to a 450mm Liebig and it worked fine for the Grainfathers 2kw of power.

The best feature I found was the display of the boiler temperature during the run, I got 5 litres of strip from my Lazy Rum wash, consisting of 4 jars of Holland and Barret molasses and 3kg of sugar in a 26lt wash.

It worked perfectly fine during the run, I even used the built in pump to add 5 litres of dunder to each of my next two rum washes :)

Nice, I like very much. Giving me thoughts
to when I buy my Grainfather. The only weak
link I can see is the T500 top being so
thin.

I don't think you have any worries on that Gaz, I've got a 2" column, with a big pc and I've never had any problems.

Here's a link to the tri-clamp adapter, it comes with seals and just has a large nut to hold it in place.

Here's one I made earlier:

Full cost £92 including T500 lid & seal, the shape gives it balance.

I run a distilling program on my ALVA controller for a stripping run, and then swap over to my 1.5 metre Boka for a spirit run.
Always give the hardest job to the laziest person because they will always find the easiest way to do it.

That's not a bad price...maybe a better fit than mine....seal wise....I made one out of silicone sheet.

not that I need one. Just look at 'em.

They are showing as low stock on the website, so if you want one, I would get one before they run out, They may never be made again if they're not a big seller.

Just had a quick play on the SD website with the shopping basket, it lets me put 21 in the basket before saying there's not enough, so 21 left :)

Does anyone know if the clips on the Grainfather that clamp the lid on are the same as the clips on the T500?
