Sweetcorn wash

Postby optic » Fri Jul 18, 2014 3:43 pm

I started this off on Wednesday afternoon and its now just about done by the looks of it,had an OG 1.045 now reading 0.990 which gives me about 7.3 % ABV

25 LITRES
3 KG Sugar
1 KG Frozen sweetcorn
1 tsp. Citric Acid
2 tsp. Yeast Nutrient
1/2 tsp. Epsom Salts
75 grams Allinsons Yeast
Boiled the sweetcorn in 2 litres of water for 20 minutes, dissolved the sugar in the FV with 2 litres of boiling water. Mashed the sweetcorn up slightly with a potato masher and added to the FV then topped up to 25 litres. Throughout its been giving off a nice sweet corn aroma, I will strip this and then repeat the wash 2 or 3 times until I've got enough for a spirit run, will be interesting to see if the corn flavour carries through.

Racked this off the sediment today and had a little sample, its still carrying a nice strong corn flavour and aroma, I've added some gelatine finings to it and the top couple of inches have cleared already so hopefully will be able to run it on Monday perhaps. Also have started another wash off and only an hour after pitching its off like the clappers already .

Ive just finished stripping the first one of these, took it down to 10% ABV which gave me 4.6 Litres @ 31%.
This is carrying a LOT of corn flavour and aroma 8) .

I've still only stripped one wash, have had one sitting ready to strip for about a month but cant find the time at the moment :( . I will get around to it eventually and reckon on doing another two or three to get a full still for the spirit run .
