T500 or a Build?

Postby Spirits4BB » Sat Jul 25, 2015 1:04 pm

Alright, you guys were right, once the bug bit I'd want to go bigger.. ;D

Now what do I do?
1. Stump up some hard earned coin on a Turbo 500 (Is it possible to buy from Europe using Euro's)?

2. Do I build a "Bubble Cap"? Love the idea of seeing what's going on inside the glass sight.

1....I've just had a look of a French site and they want £380..(Euros 537) John so no savings there mate....may as well buy from the UK.

2....IMHO I'd build a 2" column, that you can run empty for a strip...then pack for the 2nd run. Later on you can add a bubble...that's what I did...just my 2 penneth John. ;)
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

You forgot to state what you wish to produce, neutral or flavoured spirit.
This may have some effect upon the road that you tread?

I'll be happy with neutral spirits to start with going by the results from Airstill.
Main purchase would be the boiler and an element then build upwards..
Had a few good idea's from members on here, fav at the mo is Bubble Cap.

Home building does give a certain satisfaction, even if it takes what seems like forever, looks like shit,(who cares?) and costs more in the long run.
Apart from coming back to home stilling with a bought air still,I have built a couple in my time and have another planned.

That is correct... I remember when I was building my 15 gallon HERMS from scratch and using it for the first time, the satisfaction was out of this world..

My thoughts for the future are running the Airstill to produce spirits..

I also want to complete my copper still but also i'm tempted to build a small 2" Bubble Cap with a 30 litre boiler.

Assuming you have a wash ready to run, you can visit the HBS today, bring home a T500 and be drinking very clean neutral tomorrow night.

I ended up selling all the bits I had for a diy build, no way could I build the coil.

Not wishing to pick a fight John51,because the your first sentence is absolutely true.
However, your closing remark above seems to be a real case of self-depreciation.
Sure, you may have kinked a few on the first tries, but anyone that can learn to run a T500,can, I believe, learn to bend a coil.
I guess that it is down to the product that you desire, your wallet and your available time.
And this is a subjective matter for an individual.
In an illicit hobby there really is no moral high ground!

ime with illicit hobbies, high is the defining word. :)

I think my coil problems were down to using a cheapo blowtorch. Didn't seem to anneal the copper properly. I was looking at a much better one but decided to put the price towards a T500 instead.

If it works and you're happy with it, it's all good.
