Latest Concoctions
It has been quite a while since I was last on these boards. And it has been quite a while since I last made anything remotely alcoholic (about a year I guess and that was for Christmas Presents!)
Recently, I decided I needed more whiskey. The stuff I made last time was up there with the best I have ever tasted (possibly a slightly blinkered view, but regardless it is damn tasty - and others agree!)
So, a couple of weeks ago, I bought some grain and brewed myself up a batch. This is now ageing on some European Oak that I had bought a couple of years ago.
In the same cupboard, I still had the staves that I used on my last couple of batches. Some Apple Wood and some Cherry Wood. I hadn't wanted to throw them away, possibly planning on using them on the BBQ to smoke some pork. Still, they were locked away in a Kilner Jar waiting to be used!
From my last brew (a year ago), I still had some left over neutral. Again, I wasn't too sure what the plan was with this, so I had just left it.
Today, I was inspired. I had been up in the loft and found some forgotten Still Spirits Flavourings. Amongst this was the Whiskey Profile Kit I bought (days before discovering this site). I had previously mad a Laphroig (sp?) style whiskey and it had tasted okay (considering). So... I have now made up 1.5 litres of Laphroig style whiskey (this is my fave) and have thrown it into the Kilner with the spent staves.
I am not sure what this will do. Either nothing - or will impart a little extra flavour. Hopefully it will smooth out a little over time.
Still, I should hopefully have a fair few litres of whiskey to drink in the coming months.

Good to see you back Pie.
My own whiskey profile kit sits unloved on a shelf.
At the time of purchase, being a complete newby, I thought it was the best £35 ever spent.
Yes, the Laphroig mix isn't too far away but is even more Linctus than linctus!
Robert.

There is no ONE way.
