Damaged Copper pipe.
I received my lastest order from JTM this morning....the 2" x 1.5 mts pipe was just rolled in thin black plastic..as you see both ends are damaged.

Around 18" there's a bad "dink"

Another 24" below that is a "puch hole".
Needless to say I've sent an email with the above photos to them. My last order contained some 10mm for the PC for the LM/VM column that I'm half way though, that had "kinks" in it were it had been rolled up to fit the box.

I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Do you get to keep the dented copper? Because that may come in handy!!

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
I too have received lengths of copper pipe from them, singly with just an address label, dinged and bent to fit in a couriers van.
Argueably not their fault.
Big order shipments fare better.
I guess that when using a discount supplier, that you must expect discount packaging, good to see that your experience here shows them to be a company with good scruples and what appears to be a decent customer relations ethic.
Despite the damage sometimes caused by shipping, they remain my first choice of copper supplier.

Yup...they refunded the cost of the 1.5 mts of 2"....£24.00. I ordered it as I'm building a smaller column for the T5..that will incorporate the thumper that I've nearly finished.
It'll be 54mm out the boiler...reduced to 35mm down to 15mm into the thumper, through a single connector that Myles has given me the drawing for, then 35mm out reduce to 15mm into the liebig.
With the damage I'll have to trim an inch or so off both ends...and then cut around the two "dinks"...maybe lose 9"/12"

You could be the next eBay mogul if there are short lengths that are in decent shape, solder on a ferrule & sell em for a 400% mark up

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
Or you could find a supplier of ball bearings the size of the inside diameter grease it up and drive it through the pipe removing the dings...
or use a lathe and turn a sizing plug... grease and drive it through... would work as well...
just an idea to kick around....
have fun and

Sorry guys, I am here for easy distilling practices and sharing.
The last two posts seem to come from clever clogs posters with a more tech. knowledge than myself.
I hope that they do not take umbrage at this..
I do not object to you knowing more than I, on any subject, I simply ask how can I and other readers utilize your knowledge, simply?
Thanks.
Robert.

I think we are all here to share info and ideas.
Technically challenging to some will be simple to others.
If a doctor of chemistry wants to discuss molecular pathways in fermentation that's fine. I won't understand it all or be able to apply it but that isn't the point.
I for one am not voting for censorship.

And neither am I, but FS's ideas seem a little difficult to put into practise, driving a drift through a fairly thin section of pipe? For sure mine would get stuck or the bottom section of the pipe crumple under pressure.
I am all for ideas, don't get me wrong.

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
First of all...thanks for the ideas, I don't have the equipment to follow FS idea....thanks
As JMT refunded the cost of the pipe I think I can stand the lose of 9/12" of the pipe.
The reason for the post at first I was pissed that it turned up like so....but as JTM acted within the hour, this alleviated the pain in my wallet. I will & can use most of the pipe....I'm now a happy bunny..nuff sed

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
i do hope you guys are kidding... if you cannot get a handle on making a sizing plug... you need a different hobby...
the plug could be wood, metal or plastic and it doesn't expand the pipe... just pushes any dents that are pushed in .... out
more than a little surprised by a couple of comments regarding the suggestion... take it or leave it
happy stillin,
FS

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
I guess some of the comments in this thread might relate to just how much equipment or machinery some may have access to.
Some users here are very "Low Tech." I have no shame in proclaiming that I consider myself to be in this user group, and often get by with a bit of bailer twine, or twatting it with a hammer.
Others, and Myles for one springs to mind here, are oft times happier with a little more careful thought and engineering.
As I always say, there is no one true way.
I am not dissing your suggestion FS, If you already own the gear to push your dents,or to make it, then that is ovbviously a path to follow.
Please don't fall out with me, or this forum over this issue.
And Happy Stillin' back at you.
Robert

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
if the ID of that copper pipe is 2" you could get a cheap steel ball bearing like this one...
http://www.craigballsales.com/aisi-304- ... -of-1.html
this was in my original post to use a bearing... they are available in almost every size...
no need for a super precision or hardened bearing just to take dents out of copper... grease it up and drive it through... 2" would do it here for USA size copper pipe depending on the wall thickness
i am sure some are available in the UK of a similar type...
just get the correct ball or make a correct sizing plug for your tubing...
happy stillin,
FS

Re: Damaged Copper pipe.
I hope everything works out. Was very surprised to hear about the damaged copper pipe from JTM because every order I have received from them has been packed in bubble wrap.
I have a set of tube expanders from Machine Mart which work OK but only up to 80 mm or so. You can also remove a dent further down a tube with a steel washer on a threaded rod.
