Just a quickie guys...I'm looking at this SSR it's a 40 amp I want it to control this 4kw element I've got coming.

I've always felt safe with lecky, I did all my own when I built my AG brewery...but just checking.

Do you want to turn it on and off or control the output ?

Control it, make use of the 4kw for warm up, then knock it back to say 2kw or lower.

For control I don't think the SSR is what you need.

I was looking at it Sunshine when I put my last order in... but I've spent enough at the moment...I have all the bits I need other than the SSR to make a new controller.

Our DIY Controller Kit is a nice and easy base package to build such a controller, the build instructions can be found on the StillDragon Community Forum. You can find the individual parts in our Controller Parts category. I know that the SSR can be found cheaper on eBay and the likes, but the kit is a great value deal. The controller is a simply way of controlling an element, the SSR in this application does the job nicely, it's already in use by a lot of people all over the planet. But of course there are more ways to reach that goal.

Hi IceFever - don't think that SSR is going to do it for you. Looks to be the sort that is either on or off - great if doing a PWM controller but that is not an option if you don't have the amps available.

PWM cycles on and off - so an example for your element would be : 4Kw on 0.5s then off for 0.5s the net effect is 2KW.
But you still need to be able to handle the 17 amps that it draws on the ON state of the duty cycle.

You want an SSR, that has a resistor so you can modulate the output rather than toggling on and off.

I have no fear at wiring one up there's enough diagrams knocking about on here, (I did a control box for my fermentation fridge), and I know it's got to handle 40 amps, but I ain't no electronic guy. back to the drawing board..
After a bit more reading then...the ssr I need is a Voltage Resistance Regulator?? do I have that correct??

If you look for the SSRs that have the resistance symbol ( a zig zag line) and ohms stated rather than a control voltage.

Doesn't need to have a zig zag line, our Solid State Relay 40A SSR makes use of a 2W470K potentiometer.

Ice,if you end up having to buy half a dozen,the excess would probably sell pretty quick on here.
I'm sure Jimmy would nod it through,without problem.

I would change the fitting on the tank.
It gotta be easier
