I think some flies are attracted to CO2 so if you have a fermenter bubbling away then expect them to be around.

There was a load of them buzzing round the light in my brew room the other day. Unfortunately fr them I have a class iv laser so once I'd put my safety goggles on the number of flies fairly rapidly decreased...

I guess it is a time of the Year thing,I currently have a problem with these little beasties.
When they are really bad,the vacuum cleaner works well; star wars style, and may the force be with you.
Otherwise,I have found leaving a glass of something with alcohol in it allows the little beggars to drown happily.
If you want to declare all out war,-try this link..http://www.wikihow.com/Get-Rid-of-Fruit-Flies

I have fun with this gizmo:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Executioner ... terminator
Gives a satisfying bang and spark when the little bugger gets zapped.
