Spend some time reading the Filtering section here.
You may end up knowing as much/more than I learnt there.
And I find re-filling my Essencia to be low on cost.
A few pennies or less per litre.

You don't even claim to be a Scot, but still want lower cost than pennies/litre.

I have a current small stock of activated charcoal/carbon, and don't expect to buy more for the next 12 months.
Then I will use a search engine to find the best deal that I can.
In the scheme of things, I consider carbon to be as cheap as chips.
And I always carbon filter my neutrals.
Even the really good ones that smell like water.
Because I can, &
because I am worth it! ;D

Hi to everyone,
Didnt wanted to make new topic so I think this one is most suitable. I wanted to ask about effect of carbon filtration on heads and tails. The way I think. We always aim to get hearts, but we have some tails and heads left in between stages. So when doing carbon filtration does carbon basically remove heads and tails, or improve them to be less toxic and what this carbon does? I always filtrating my neutral, but I just want to understand how it works?
Also what about those 50 abv? Where is magic here? Because as I read you should filtrate more than a 50 %.

Many thanks for an answers

Hi domasj

Filtering should be done on spirit below 50%, I dilute everything to drinking strength before filtering, above 50% the carbon is less efficient.

As far as I can tell the stuff the HBS sell is just standard activated carbon, what’s important from our point of view is it’s size, there are two varieties available in this respect 0.4mm - 0.85mm and a larger version, not sure exactly but it’s up to about 1.4mm ish.

We want the smaller size for best results, Hableton Bard now manufacture their own and you can get it from HBS in 1kg bags for under £10 from memory.

There’s a book somewhere on the internet by about Home distillation by a guy called Gert Strand, it’s a long time since I’ve com across it but it’s very detailed about how to carbon filter, be worth looking up if you can find it.

Also worth noting that carbon filtering won’t hide bad cuts, if you’ve got traces of heads and or tails, then you will still have them in the filtered product, maybe less noticeable but they will still be there, think of filtering as a way of polishing good spirit.

Domasj,
Please wait until tomorrow, and I will have time to try the best that I can to answer your questions in a way that you may understand.
This is not a simple topic to explain.
Your use of English is very good, but I fear that you may not understand the idioms and other uses of the English language that native speakers use.
I am sure people here are trying to help, but may just be confusing you.
24 hours my friend, :)
