Friend / Foe

I recently noticed the "add friend / foe" button if you click on someone's name, I'm forever clicking on people when I actually wanted the thread title below their name but I'd never noticed these before. Are they new? What do they do? Does anyone use them?

To my knowledge, the button has always been there.
I believe it to be generic and placed by the makers of generic websites, in order to big the site up.
Imagine there being enough members that you actually needed to use this facility...
I was as surprised by this post as the recent polling one.
I have considered a polling post in the past but someone was arsed to use it for the first time I believe.
