Ooops, I'm a dick!!!

Postby Anavrin » Fri May 08, 2015 8:42 pm

Major school boy error, I had 14 litres of strip from molasses washes stored in a cornie keg, earlier in the week I measured its ABV (58%) poured it into my boiler and set up ready for a spirit run.

Anyway I've been busy since and now won't have the time for the run this weekend.

Ok I thought, I'll transfer it back into the cornie so I can strip some sugar wash tomorrow instead, should be much quicker, so I lifted my boiler up onto the side, attached a small pipe from the tap to the cornie and left it draing back into the cornie.

I returned to the garage about 10 mins later to find the same cornie keg full to the brim and several litres of strip all over the floor!!! What The!!!

Forgot I'd proofed it down to 30% ready for the spirit run, what a twat!
Just lost about 8 litres of 30% rum strip :(

Let any man, who has never had a major cockup relative to distilling, step forward. I bet not too many will.

Impatience in my case.......

Some 80+ % spirit that had come out my old super reflux cloudy.

Straight into my smart still.

Switch on and a while later, erindoors spots a small puddle so says she thinks it might have "burped" a bit.

I lean over to switch it off and check, just in time for it to "burp" all over the place........including me

Fortunately, the physical properties of high strength spirit, meant that as it was flying out/up, it was rapidly dropping the heat, so all I got was a mild sun burn like thing and a very, very clean kitchen area that dried out quickly.

No trip to A&E required......... but lesson learned ;D

@Anavrin: mate, feckups are a condition upon entry re distilling.... IMHO
heres (but) one of mine:
I home brew beer as well as ferment an AG mash for distilling scotch-type spirit.
One day.... ::) I was diligently bottling my wheat beer (with secondary ferment carbon and superclean bottles being capped etc etc) when I thought/noticed
ARRGGHH
I was, indeed, bottling my scotchwash.
Allgood mate.......

+1 with chill there.
Damn shame to lose premium product.

I quite often lose neutral,in both strip and spirit stages,as I can currently only run the still at the end of a long work day,and sometimes it becomes impossible to stay awake until the end of the run.
Then comes the wide awake thought, "oh f*ck,what is the time, how much have lost?"
Usually not much,so far,but for safety reasons I am planning a timer on the circuit,to allow for total periods of somnambulance.

I believe more and more that this is the state I am in before bed these days, and not just pished.
Maybe I protest too much?
