Glycerine - To add or not??

Postby ghostfreak » Sat Sep 26, 2009 1:26 pm

HI There.
I see Still Spirits sell little bottles of Glycerine that they recommend you put 5mls of into your finnished spirit to give it more Fullness? Just wondered if anyones tried this and if the Morrisons stuff would be the same?

Glycerine - To add or not??

Postby optic » Sun Sep 27, 2009 2:02 am

The glycerine is used in every flavouring essence, it is to add smoothness and mouth feel to the spirit, the still spirits whisky profile kit i have got uses it up to 20mls per litre in some of the recipes that are with the kit,and yes the morrisons stuff will be ok ,probably cheaper to....lol

Glycerine - To add or not??

don\'t forget, that not only does glycerine add body/viscosity, it has a certain sweetness as well (part of why it seems to smooth out harsh flavour...... the sweetness masks some of the alcohol hotness type flavour).
So, use it, if necessary, but sparingly. It\'s better to use too little, than too much.....

Quite right there Phantom you can always add a bit more but you are buggered if you put to much in,the recipe in the whisky profile kit for Glenfiddich says to add 9mls to 750mls far to much IMO it certainly removes the alcohol hotness to the extent that it has a sweet edge ,reckon the next one i do i will try adding half the ammount, the kit is good though i will have fun tinkering with different recipes.

Glycerine - To add or not??

I\'ve never put glycerine in anything, so about 5ml per 750ml of spirit is about right?

If you have kitchen measures i.e. tsp, 1/2 tsp, 1/4 tsp, etc etc, start with the smallest one.
Yes there\'s a bit of rounding up/down, but basically, 1 teaspoon is 5ml\'s, 1/2 is ..... etc etc, you get the idea.
You can always start with the smallest one you have (if you have a set), then if need be, use multiples of that.

Glycerine - To add or not??

I only add it to my own made spirits - like peach or plumb (out the garden) schnapps etc. I never add anything to the still spirits range (unless its required). It does mellow off any sharpness and adds a bit of body. The good thing about homebrew - its you’re the master brewer / distiller and can do whatever you like. I love to play !!!!
If I have learned anything in this last year is that making a good clean base, is king,

Glycerine - To add or not??

Postby HangOver » Sat Oct 03, 2009 2:23 pm

i got some glycerine and add about 1ml at time to 750ml bottle.

After 5ml i couldn\'t tell any difference either visably or taste so stopped.

I gave the missus a blind taste test and she picked the one with glycerine as the better of the two so go figure maybe i have no taste buds or just like that little bite you get from spirits?

so far i am not impressed with glycerine in whisky even using it as low as 5ml per 750ml botle using the recipes in the whisky profile kit it seems to sweet to me,if you use the amount they say it is almost like drinking a liquer,so i guess i like that spirit bite to HangOver.

Glycerine - To add or not??

Postby Opus 27 » Tue Oct 13, 2009 10:55 pm

Thanks everybody you\'ve answered the question I\'ve just posted on a different thread.

\"does glycerine make my whiskey sweet?\" Obviously thats a big yes so I will delete it from my profile recipes.
