Re: What I Did Today
On this occasion it's what I did yesterday
We had some friends round and I'd run out of home made vodka, so I thought to myself jokingly "I'll have to slum it with some Russian Standard instead"
I had some left over I've not tried for a while, too my supprise I found I was slumming it!!!
My stuffs much tastier :-)

Re: What I Did Today
I know it ain't spirit but I also guess that a lot of guys on here brew beer & make wine.
Well months back I put the last of my frozen rhubarb 12/13 kgs into a bucket..(3rd x25 liters) I've made this year.
I've just not got around to finish it off, I thought I'd lost it to be honest, so this morning I took the lid off thinking "this is going down the drain" well it didn't look as bad as I'd expected so tried a sip...
it's the 2nd best I've ever made.
You can see from the photo the DJ on the left was the first, the one on the right started to pick up a little sediment. I had to stop to get another DJ, and upset the bottom of the bucket...
Never mind the one at the back will settle out in time....waste not want not.
Sorry about the pic..a little out of focus.

Re: What I Did Today
Rhubarb can be a bit of a Bugger.......
Colin Tweeds youtube vids say about freezing the rhubarb, then suspend it in a bag over something to collect the defrosting juice. Don't squeeze it once it stops dripping as that causes cloudiness/haze.
Then the juice is let down to the fermenting volume with the appropriate amount of sugar and water, and continue as normal.......

Whereas, I wait until I see the rhubarb being harvested at Rankins Farm (just south of Maidstone). Then if need be, I can see of I can ponce a good many kilos of discards (they grow for some of the supermarket chains)........
Still gotta wait till next year though. To expensive now.........

Re: What I Did Today
We've 2 plots of rhubarb on our allotment that give us a fair amount, then we can help ourselves from the Manor house, have as much as we want.
Last year I chopped up around 26kgs of rhubarb and popped it all in one of the freezers, then I have it to play with later on in the year.
"What I did" a couple of weeks back was Rhubarb & Vanilla jam....never made jam in my life, always been the Shmbo that's done it. Turned out brill...even if I do say so.

Re: What I Did Today
Today returned from what will be my only holiday of the year, almost a week in the wilds of Scotland,No mobile phone,no internet.
Chill-axed,ate very well, fine wines and beers and spirits.
And strangely the sun shone!
Much fishing, big wild brown trout;also unbelievably just bagged 100 (spot on count, that's the unbelievable bit) Mackerell for the freezer, and just cooked the last two live crabs.
Nose back to the grindstone.
And time to get a couple of washes going....
Robert.

Re: What I Did Today
it has been a good summer, although my hops plans did not produce an effective crop I managed to find some at a local house,, Now to make some beer, soon and fast as I purchased 4 corny kegs and have to fill them up too,
We have a local buy and sell group on Facebook so this stuff can be picked up fairly cheep, I also managed to get a complete wine making kit for next to nothing, so i will be getting that stuff filled to,, maybe not wine though,,

Re: What I Did Today
Started to pack my bags. Returning to China after 5 weeks in California. A few days in Hong Kong and will be home in a week or so. Time to get back to producing the good stuff. Water should be OK by now as it has rained some since I have been gone.
