Air Still distillation breakdown

What goes in is directly proportional to what comes out.
A 14% wash will yield, say 1500ml before getting down to 20%.
A 9% wash will yield, say 1000ml before getting down to 20%.

The problem HBS have is that once we've got the equipment, there is nothing we actually need to buy from them.

I use Vodka Star yeast because of the consistency and convenience but I get it from Ellie Clair on the bay as my local HBS doesn't stock it.

Ive just done a wash of VS for first timem wot do you cut the spirit down with, ie tap water/ bottled water.

Me too, VS from Ellie Claire and tap water. My water is medium soft, pH of 7.0. It clouds up when the spirit is first diluted but clears in seconds.

I have been going on about a new still for ages. I woke up on Father's Day and there was a t500 looking at me.

Did my first run yesterday and am very pleased by with its efficiency.

Onwards and upwards.

Just one question - I bet you have heard that one before!

When I've done the stripping runs, ended up with 9 ltrs of approx 40% do I have to water down to 30%?
I've tried a spirit run and had a leak/run down the side of the still so switched off, or could this be I need a new seal? I've used ceramics and conditioner.

I routinely run 40% low wines. As for the leak, I would be concerned about that. Was it a dribble or was the lid lifting off? The former might be a dirty, old, or deformed seal. Lifting off suggests the outlet is plugged or your are getting foaming or surge boiling. ceramics and conditioner should prevent foaming and surge boiling, so I would check that water runs through the outlet.

OK that's one answered 40% should be ok, thought that it would be, the leak was more of a dribble but constant. I opened the still carefully there was no foaming, it looked clear. the still was producing what looked like the normal dripping output, but I will check that next.

Check flow through with water all ok
started distilling again using beads and conditioner, had a small dribble from around seal area but gave lid a slight turn and it has stopped, think maybe I had been to quick to remove the lid and not giving seal time to cool properly.
Well on the way to first double distill and new seal ordered.
