Googe's Kale Wash Progress/Progression "Googe's Goo"
I know Googe is a member here but I have been keeping up with his progress on this wash... here are a few of his post regarding it and the progress he has made... don't think its even as hard as the lentil wash and may be less expensive depending on the cost of the Kale where your located..
hope your enjoy reading about his work, as much as I have...

Googe's Kale Wash
June 2013 edited July 2013 in Recipes Flag
Hi all, put down a kale wash about 5 days ago. Its freezing here atm but its still powering on, very active wash!
25 L wash
100 g kale blended with water
5 kg white sugar
90 g bakers yeast
July 2013 Flag
Ran a small test batch today, no more tpw for me now, came out very nice, shits all over tpw low wines run I get through this still. just had a taste at 40% and there's no kale flavor what so.ever, was worried about that. This would be as good as you could get if it was put through more.plates. he next wash I just through sugar in the Lees with warm water, no.yeast and it's been bubbling like crazy for the past week.
January 10 Flag
I've done about six or seven 80L ferments now, it very clean, my missus is an aromatherapist and has a sense of smell like a blood hound and she always could smell something in the tpw washes, this one she says it's like water. It's pretty nice as a mixer too. I always had trouble with tpw as I do single runs, would always get some sort of flavour come.through, don't with this. I've tried it different ways but I think the best way is to boil some in a pot for 5 mins to get the goodness out then toss the kale out and use the boil water in the ferment. I thought I might be boiling off goodness this way but doesn't seem to be the case. Blending it worked well to but the solids seem to be really suspended in the wash, they take forever to settle, with the boil way I don't need to worry, the finished ferment clears out really well!. I've only used bakers so far, would like to try others though. Good luck with yours.

Thanks FS! I'd forgotten about this experiment. As much as I detest Kale (HATE it), I will have to give this a try. Gotta be better than the wife's stewed kale.

It's amazing what you can take and make a wash with, this is all new to me, first TPW..then Lentil..you start to wonder where it'll all end.
Well my first ever Lentil is almost done so maybe a Kale one next??
I hope your good lady don't ever get to read your post's Chuck

Try and get her to fry it in butter with grated nutmeg,my preferred way of eating it.
Can't imagine it boiled, can't say that I'd fancy it.

Hi Googe, nice to see you around again. Kale chips... I could go for those! It is the half limp, half scratchy texture that does me in.

Re: Googe's Kale Wash Progress/Progression
Thanks.chill, lol yeah it can be vulgar!. Rub it with a small amount of olive oil, some rosary, garlic and bake till crispy. the recipes on google.anyway lol.
I will add, when I do the kale wash, I take it off the still at between 90~93%, through 3 plates with a.lava packed section. Is it's that clean at that ABV it should be great at 95%.

Re: Googe's Kale Wash Progress/Progression
The only correct use for Curly Kale
is in traditional Irish Colcannon which is, essentially, steamed or boiled Curly Kale, finely chopped, after cooling, and mixed into creamy mashed potatoes with finely chopped onion (according to taste) seasoned with Salt and Black Pepper, to taste, and served with a big knob of Butter on top.
I believe a similar equivalent would be the English dish called 'Bubble & Squeak'
I did say similar not the same
Now I'm hungry, time for brekkies

Yes only similar,Bubble and Squeak gains it's name from the actions and noises made when you fry up left over mashed potato and cabbage, the next day or days later.
I'm not sure many people 'cook' it anymore.
While this is not a cookery forum, the Irish Boxty cakes, take some beating with a fried breakfast.

Re: Googe's Kale Wash Progress/Progression "Googe's Goo
I just had to have a go at this wash.... here is a progress report...
FS
January 26 edited January 26 Flag
Made up 28 gallons of it, but i am gonna call it "Googe's Goo"... blended the kale to juice and used the whole plant in the wash... this wash will make Kermit the Frog jealous, so ifn you don't like green stay away from the Goo.
44 pounds of sugar to 28 gallons plus 1 pound of juiced Kale wash cost of $27.00 us
calculates out to 11.1% wash
added 60 grams of high sg bakers yeast at 95f
IF all goes well it should be rolling in a short while...
Thanks in advance for the Goo Recipe, Googe
FS
January 27 Flag
The Goo has dropped about 10 pts sg wise and has billions of champagne bubbles rising... its running a little warm around 90F. but looks and smells good.
January 27 Flag
24 hours it's dropped 20 pt on the sg scale still chugging along..
FS
January 28 edited January 28 Flag
Still working off, is down to 1.040 another 10 pts... was cold last night here wash temp dropped down about 10 degrees .... think it slowed it a little but it's still champagne bubbling away wash is rolling from bottom to top you can see bits an pieces of the kale surfacing...
FS
.btw wash tastes great....smells good
Wrapped the fermenter and added a oil filled heater in the room... temps up to 90 or so... Still champagne bubbles and the SG is 1.030, dropping about 10 pts a day still.. tastes sweet kind of a melonish kiwi flavor to the wash...smells great but with little or no smell.
Starting to clear a bit, the krausen is much less and the color is no longer bright green but has fallen a little dull looking and much more transparent/
that's the news...
happy stillin,
FS

wash tastes great still sweet ....smells good no off smells
January 31 Flag
SG is still dropping, bubbling away still the small champaigne bubbles....ferment is still rolling up from the bottom and you can see small pieces of kale move up.... as Googe described it like snow in a snow globe..... color is now a dull green rather than vivid green.
Wash is loosing some of the sweetness and now has a tart edge on it as I expected as the SG drops...
February 1 Flag
SG is still dropping, bubbling away still the small champaigne bubbles....ferment is still rolling up from the bottom... BUT HAS SLOWED DRASTICALLY PH HAS DROPPED TO UPPER 4'S OR LOW 5's But it is still working off
Smell is still clean no off smells, taste is good but getting more tart less sweet...
February 2 edited February 2 Flag
The wash was just taking a 24 hour breather i guess... it back rolling along and dropped about 8 SG points over night... again its like a snow globe with small bits surfacing back to the top...
The only thing i did was to use a spatula and stir the wash up for about 2 minutes moving all the yeasties lying on the bottom back into suspension.
This was done after @googe mentioned to me that he stirs his washes daily... good or bad it seems to have worked in this case...
I am letting this wash take its own course what ever the time required...
FS
Yeasties must have enjoyed the superbowl and worked overtime... the wash is at .995 this morning and tastes a hint of sour, nothing intense of excessive. No off smell.
Still bubbling some, want to see just how far it might drop...
8:18AM edited 8:25AM Flag
Kale wash is now at .989, I am pulling the plug and letting it chill down and clear... the taste is amazingly clean... very small sour hint should be a 11% wash will let it clear and give her a run through a thumper, two plates and 36" of scoria or that's the plan at his point...
Will update it as it progresses thanks to all who are following this thread..

I tried to be precise with the description since it is an experimental wash at this point.. but it seems to be proving itself out...
