just a quick update took a reading today 980 going to clear the wash Sunday and put it through the still Monday.

Does the reading look fine or would you leave it a few more days.

980?
Have noticed a couple of references with final SGs lower then 990 - always thought that was the lowest point?

A high ABV wash can go lower than 990.

I don't rely much on readings other than "do they change from day to day"? Is it still making gas? Has most of the yeast fallen out to the bottom?

You will not go much below .990 or even .980. By that time the alcohol level will kill off the yeast and the fermentation process is over.

Go and run it.

I've just finished stilling the Vodka I got out 2 litres at 90% added water to bring it down to 50%, and if the smell is anything to go off think we could have a decent Vodka.

Talking to the HBS guy who did the Vodka at the same time as me got similar results, and what we have decided to do between us is he has added carbon but I'm leaving mine without the carbon, and then we are going to compare the two different types.

Fingers crossed.

Fatlad, out of interest how are you detuning your still to pull off 90%. If I just run faster on a packed column to reduce the ABV I find I just drag tails into the product.

If I run at 90% the product is so tails contaminated I couldn't drink it. I hope this is not the case with your product, but just curious.

Hi Capt

I really don't know I ran my still at 60 degree's and not the recommended 65 degree's threw the first 100 mil away and after 2 and a half hours to 3 hours turned the still of.

Speaking to the guy at the HBS he ran his still at 70 degree's and he said he was achieving 98%.

Hope it makes sense.

After sitting for a month I will send you a sample if you like to see what you think.
