Infusion basket
Hello everyone.
I bought this http://www.lovebrewing.co.uk/still-spir ... on-basket/ for gin making and such things.
My question is, if I filled this with copper scrubbers or saddles would it be a good way to
get some copper into the system and maybe cause a little reflux?

MASH - CALLING MASH! THEY HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!
Personally I think you are better putting your copper in the wash - use pipe offcuts or copper coins - as this has the added benefit of helping prevent pukes.
I can't see how you will get any reflux at all, as reflux requires holding a still column at a constant temperature range - you can't do this with an AirStill as it is designed to continually heat up much like a kettle (you have no cooling available), and your 'column' would only be an inch long in any case..

Re: Infusion basket
Duffer, in MHO you would get some reflux from your oddly loaded basket, but very little. and not worth posting/writing home about.

^ What they said
There is also a thread on here recently about how good these may/may not be for making gin.
Why not have a go and do us a review?
Loads of tips, tricks & recipes if you search 'sputnik'

Re: Infusion basket
By god I'll give it a go! When it fails I'll just chuck em in the wash.
It maybe a while before I try gin as I'm still green behind the ears.
But yes, it does look interesting.
Thanks.

Try a sputnik. Much cheaper and a bit larger.

Re: Infusion basket
I am. Well I will be once this bloody wash sorts itself. Made mine from a £1.50 Asda sieve some m6 threaded rod and nuts/washers.
Only gripe doing that is that the sieve was a bugger to drill through, and had to use cobalt drill in the end, and found the shitty rods have lost their zinc after a test run in the still, but hey we live and learn!

Re: Infusion basket
I looked at the Still Spirits Gin basket for the air Still, personally I think it's too small and because it's close to to output tube, it could get blocked by botanicles causing the top of the Airstill to pop off, I think putting some bits of copper in it is possibly its best use, not for reflux, just for having some copper in the the vapour path.

Re: Infusion basket
The rods I used were some leftovers I had in the shed. Nice and shiny they were, so thought they were SS, like the sieve. Oh well
As I'm off to Franceland tomorrow, the Sputnik, wash and everything else can wait for 10 days.
