Heads/feints run or 'Queen's share'.

The distillation process itself

Heads/feints run or 'Queen's share'.

Postby Duffer26 » Tue Apr 18, 2017 6:16 pm

Hi, I have 2 litres of heads at 75%.

What's the scoop on triple distilling this lot?

How do I make the cuts with this and what should I expect?

I've followed the AS best practice guide on here.

Thanks, Marc.

I've found the Guide works for me. I take 1.6 litres of heads and dilute up to 4l with warm water (gives a bit of a head start!) and then collect everything in 100ml batches. Air overnight and then taste/smell as usual to make cuts.

Cheers

Thanks. As it's all heads would I get lots of heads, some hearts, but no tails?

If it is just heads, you will get a lot more heads than normal and no tails. So prepare to collect more samples at the front end. If you are running an Airstill (or any pot still) you can discard the worse of the them (say the first 1/3) and recycle the rest into your heads collection.

Collect in jars and leave open to breathe for a day or so (cover with kitchen roll or similar if reading this in a month or two or fruit flies will be annoying).

Fores and heads will refuse to stop smelling like nail varnish remover, even after airing. You'll know after 24 hours or so where hearts start, even if your sense of smell is as poor as mine as hearts will have virtually or no smell.

Tails I am not an expert on and struggle separating a little, but that wasn't the question luckily.

Hmmmm, Ok. No fore shots. Lots of heads. The rest hearts.....Right?

What should I collect down to? 20%?

Thanks, Marc.

HoooooooWEEEEEEE this stuff turned out great!

Triple distilled perfection.

I cut the first 500ml then collected down to 30%.

As suspected the tails never turned up, It was just weaker and weaker, no off smells or flavours.

It didn't need filtering but I will anyway.

I ended up with 1.5L @40%.

Good enough for the Queen. But she's not getting any.

Marc.

Great news. I'm triple distilling more often now as I find it easier to make repeated cuts and recycle heads and tails while getting hearts from centre of each run. Obviously that's partly as I get increased smearing with a pot still, compared to the T500 guys n gals.
