Sue...remember the old adage..."patience is a virtue" and the more you do the more you'll learn with this hobby.

I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Re: Complete Novice !!!
I am not sure what you are asking about "when you redistill". It is the deeper tails that smell the most. As I don't strip down into them, I get very little smell on the spirit run. I do lose some recoverable alcohol but I get to stay married. It seemed like a reasonable trade.
If you collect the tails and re-distill you will get the smell again at the end but not at the beginning. The smells is a result of the higher alcohols and other compounds boiling off at the higher temperature when most of the ethanol has been recovered.

Not sure what you are asking here?
Not sure what you are re-distilling?
There I was looking for a way to help you,and some other bugger beat me to it.
Rotten lot seem to hang around here.

Not sure what you are re-distilling?X know what to compare the smell to. Dank, musty, a bit like boiled cardboard might smell. The smell seems to linger. I notice it, but don't find it so offensive.
I was looking for something properly repulsive. Yes indeed boiled cardboard. Thank you.
Am I right to assume if you re-distill it shouldn't re-appear?

There is no ONE way.

Questions questions questions
I was thinking of redistilling a clean neutral [that I believe is finished]... should it still give a boiled cardboard smell.
In a normal run would I expect this smell stripping or in the spirit run or both?

I'd expect to pick it up in the spirit run Mash, as that's where cuts happen. The tails are in the stripping run, but so is everything else, so I don't worry about how that smells!
As for your neutral, difficult to comment as it will depend on how carefully you cut it, but again as the AirStill tends to smear the boundary between heads, hearts and tails, I'd expect you to get a bit at the end.
Head above parapet = prepared to be shot at!!

Absolutely my thinking. How carefully did I cut it, I thought this could be something else I could look out for.

Re: Complete Novice !!!
I get it on both the strip and spirit runs. It is much stronger on the strip as there is more in it to smell. As I cut off my strip early so my wife is angry not furious, there is not a lot from the spirit run. It still gets commented on though.
