Glycerin

Postby mikew41 » Wed Sep 02, 2015 2:03 pm

I've seen reference to Glycerin used in some recipes/flavourings. What does glycerin actually do? Is it a preservative? Bulking agent? Sweetener?

Gives it a thicker mouth-feel.

Yarp.
Until you try it you won't know, and then is it actually worth the botheration?
Myself,I'm coming down on
the side of the don't do it side of the fence.
But maybe you have to try it.
Personal preference/taste.

I've played a bit with the Still Spirits Whisky kit - all the suggested recipes in it use large amounts of glycerin. Far too much for my taste - when I mess with it now, I use about a quarter of what they recommend..

I have some that I got in the job lot with my T500 but I don't think I'm that experienced yet...so unless a recipe explicitly calls for it, I'll probably leave it in the bits box.

Robert, I am with you on this one, tried it - not keen.

It does have a slight sweetening effect (not fermentable) and much more than 1 teaspoon per gallon is too much for me.

I ruined some of Rum Johns splendid syrup rum with this and think it will have to go back in the still.

How much is a good amount, or it it more about taste. Looking at adding some to a liger of neutral I've got on oak dominoes.

Thanks

Think it's 1tsp per gallon. You can overdue it.

A considered alternative to Glycerine, has long been Maple syrup.
It can add great things to a spirit.

Is the glycerin you use in wine making the same stuff as used in e-cigs?

Might sound a dumb question, I assume it is but I've never used it.

Yes.
The stuff you buy online is significantly thicker than the cake making stuff in the supermarket.

This stuff is the best. Comes in various quantities. Dilute for Ecig

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301746604099

The Kosher cake stuff that I bought on amazon, by the litre was as thick as Granny's rice pudding.
You may be surprised to learn that ethanol is a great dilutent (Feck the spell checker) for ecigs.
Been there, worn the T shirt.
Now nicotine and Ecig free.
I still own Fecked lungs.
