Corn mash here I go....

So boiling the liquid from the mash tun has no benefit whatsoever when brewing spirit wash?

I don't think it does...most recipes you see are drain into a bucket. Saying that only Sunday or Monday I was reading a post where the guy said he took the grain out of the mash tun and turned up the heat to a roiling boil.

Then let it cool before adding the yeast....I really don't know if it makes any difference at all...but it works for this guy...I'll see if I can find it and link to it.

There are many things we learn as Brewers that go straight out the window with this hobby, some are very hard to get your head round, like don't bother sterilising!!!! Sounds crazy to a brewer but for me theses days when making a wash, I just rinse my bucket so it's visibly clean and I don't have any problems

Another is its not nessesary to boil anything unless your inverting sugar, I beleve grain specially malted for whisky even has some kind of special treatment so the wort produced is less suseptable to infection because the comercial whisky distillers don't boil.

Backwoods brewing and stilling, by needs, gets to the point as quickly as possible.

Absolutely agree. In modern home brewing I think people get too sterilised in every sense of the word. It seems to lead them away to focus on the numbers and the software and not on the beer.

Something you never hear mentioned here is infections and oxidisation. Both valid topics but not a issue. That tells you something.

I'm off work this week, so it's a little like R&R...I've done a lot of surfing the web about using corn & other grains.

In 2011 I joined HD, I still pop my head around the door every week or so...but they can be a little heavy handed with newbies.

In 2013 I joined Stillsmart..because I had an Airstill...I also joined an Aussie forum.

In-between times like most other guys I read on other forums & commercial sites..searching for that elusive bit of info that will make me a master stiller. Out there in netland are guys who are big fish in this pond of ours...these are the guys who tell us minnows what we're doing wrong...I'm not being disrespectful in any way, but when you have these mentors..the guys we aspire to be giving opposite facts..what the hell do I do???

The biggest fact that I've come too is, what I was told when I started brewing beer...make a brew, if it's not right for you make one change, one change only, not two or more...that way you will have a base to work from.

I've now come to the same conclusion when stilling...my first corn mash maybe ok all be it a little light on the ABV...I won't know until I've run it.

The next one I do I will boil the bejesus out of it...and find out for myself if that's the correct way.

+1 Robert, the big fish in the netlands are like you me and bobby-magee
they all have opinions, everyone has a recipe a method and (no fault of
there own) and they/we would like to get it out there, but everybody has
there own personal tastes. I like, you may not like, ''''but mines is the
best''' hell i'm an experienced distiller..so my avatar says ..do
you believe that, i certainly don't.
Ice, your corn mash will work, believe..if the abv is low and you get a
low yeild, just make more.Iv'e had my bad days with corn, it can be a bit
frustrating/confusing, its corn. Alright i dont use the tech and the numbers
like you do, i do things a bit redneck style, but thats what iv'e worked
with, i enjoy that. You said yourself, if the recipe does'nt work change
one thing at a time. same applies to wash/mash
