Allbran whisky
Didn't know if i should have continued this in the allbran wash thread or not, so i thought i would just start another.
400grams bran flakes (i used kellogs)
500grams dried extra light malt extract
454gram jar malt extract (holland and barrat)had it lying around
4.5kgs of sugar
1 pack single strain whisky yeast with a.g.
crush branflakes into fermenter and pour over
3ltrs of boiling water stir and add liquid malt
then add dried malt and sugar top up to 26 ltrs giving
a good stir to aeriate.when its around 26c then sprinkle yeast over.leave for 10-15mins
then mix in well, ferments out at .992 about 7-8 days
rack and let it clear. I didn't get a s/g due to the flakes.
I done this with the airstill (all i could do at the present time) pothead wasn't built yet
done 8x3ltr runs to avoid puking, gave me 2 spirit runs on lower power with a dimmer switch, i got around 1.5 ltrs @ 65%
then oaked on charred J/D smoking chips for month.diluted to 45%abv then filtered through cotton in a stainless funnel
bottled and stored for a couple of months.
I made a post on the (what i done today thread) that i was a bit dubious about the taste, possibly my age/oaking skills
so i made a cream base and used a bottle to make baileys type.
Then the strangest thing happened last night,i was out in my local real ale pub with my nephew and they have real good variety of speciality spirits, which is a thing you dont see very often now, at least where i live. So nearing the end of the night
i got my eye on a bottle of maker marks bourbon, so we endulged ourselfs in a few nips. Having never tasted it beforei thought ooooh! mine doesn't taste that bad after all.. i'm not stating that ive made a makers copy but i will make this again and run it in pot-mode.hopefully it will be better than the airstill trial. enjoying a glass now with ice.
