Jar lids?

Postby Jolly John » Wed Mar 19, 2014 4:26 pm

Just ordered some 1/2 gallon "pickling" jars, that come with the normal screw on metal lid. Are these lids OK with 60-65% ageing spirit? I assume they will be coated inside, but my experience with old pickle jars is that the coating deteriorates. I want to leave hooch in them, with oak sticks, for at least a year. The jars are £3.00 each, I can get natural cork stoppers at around £1.60 a piece, might be worth the investment.
No one is completely useless, they can always serve as a bad example.

When I use big Kilner jars, I put a piece of cotton material (old shirt)over the open jar then screw on the lid, I haven't seen any deterioration of the plastic coating so far.
Always give the hardest job to the laziest person because they will always find the easiest way to do it.

There is also the rubber seal to worry about (is it alcohol resistant?). For that high of an ABV, I'd opt for the cork or a different storage vessel.

I think I am with Chuck on this one.
I cheerfully use a large old pickle jar for nuking samples of product, but would swap it out for another if I noticed signs of deterioration.
For longer term aging,I might spend the extra,to protect my investment.
Says the man who last week drove away from home leaving 5 litres of 68% Cachaca sitting in a softly corked demi-john on oak chunks.
Colouring nicely, when I left, and SO looking forward to sampling when I get back.
I obviously need to make more,to give it a real chance to age.
Patience is not a virtue that I possess....

These are the jars: http://www.compaksouth.com/shop/picklin ... lejar.html

These are the stoppers:

In the big scheme of things, they look a good, long term investment.

I really must try that cachaca recipe soon.
