Waste of electricity in this weather!

Post by Anavrin »

Anyone else running their still in this weather?

With the XMAS deadline looming I’ve no choice but to crack on and strip a wash, just feel like I’m throwing good money away by doing it in the freezing cold!!

I’m surprised my wash wasn’t frozen as it’s been sat in the still for a week!

@icefever ~ what are you doing on that lid?
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

@Anavrin.....I'm in the same hole dude, I've been thinking about stripping a 40-litre sugar wash for the last week. On the bright side it's getting warmer over the weekend, have a safe journey up to Scotland today mate. ;)

There is no gas, so why not increase the insulation?
Pop a sleeping bag round it? Camp mat and a bungee cord?

I had some beer priming in the crates @ 19c, under a pile of stuff. Ambient never moved from 5c.

Oh yeah. Very good, very easy. I have a thought (no proof) that it helps with a neutral in a pot still.

This cold weather has scared me out of my shed! I have a still full of backset to chuck and clean, and until I do that I havn't got room to start a new brew. But I'll be there when the promised warm weather arrives. I'm down to my last gallon of hooch, so I need to get some more on the go !! My new rule is....if I need to heat the shed to work in there, it's too cold to be in there! :P

If the warmer weather they promise does arrive tomorrow, I shall be running a strip wash this week.

Tis the joy of airstills. Pop the little fella on, and in a wee while the shed is cosy again. Enough to get on. Pop two on and it is positively tropical 🌴🌴

Mauritius is 4 hours ahead, so give it a couple of hours and we can catchup for lunch. Rude to start too soon. You didn't take me for a "gin on my cornflakes" chap did you?

Just stripped 200l of tffv and done an all feints run in my feckin freezing garage, only have 100l of cornflake wash to sort out before Christmas now ;), can't face refluxing tffv all day today.
As I was left totally unsupervised I prepped a bit of oak and popped it in the oven for a couple of hours at 210 C to find out if our coconut/lime defuser would overcome the smell of hot oak, er, no it doesn't. I don't have any white dog to oak so I nuked some tffv instead. it turned out way better than expected, vanilla oaky loveliness prevails. Normally I blowlamp oak and have to filter out charcoal dust from cf whiskey 🤪, not any more though.

Dear future reader..

NEVER EVER toast oak in the kitchen in the oven. It will cause an explosion and a fire. I know. I have.

Sounds great, did you sweeten it slightly with maple syrup too. Mmmmmm. Better have a go myself before Christmas

I wrapped my sticks in foil and only toasted 8 sticks 120mm x 20 x 20 Mash, just curious to see how it faired against blowlamping. I didn't need to sweeten it mate it was good as it was. I'm now wondering how much wood you need to blow your oven door off

Yeah! Love my Airstill.

However. Not necessarily bothered how much electricity I use. Or how many polar bears get fried. It is he cost.

Having reviewed the contract my wife has arranged with our power provider, I discover, after 8pm or after 8 pm at a weekends, power we purchase at £0.12 per KWh. At other times £0.42 per hour.

I am mindful of when I switch the Still on. I want to produce a UKU (10ml of Alcohol, calculated at 100% Abv) at £0.03 pence.
I am still able to do that.

Forgive me, I have not digested the whole thread, however, I have commented on this before.
