LME light
Hi everyone,
Bit of a random question.
I can buy a 25kg tub of LME light for just under £50. My questions are: Does the light bit just mean the colour of the LME anD not a reduced flavour also when opened does this go off, as it will take me a couple of months to use it all?
Cheers everyone

Re: LME light
My understanding is the "light" is refering to colour of wash, not flavour.
And I would expect with limited cap off times, and proper procedures, the tub should last a couple of months.

Re: LME light
Light is indeed colour of end product.
Be careful with malt extract, it does stuck in the moisture from the air (like a hoover) and then turn into a solid lump.
Couple of months is ok. Perhaps more, but make sure the lid off for the least ammount of time and replaced securely. Better vaccy pack into batches.

Re: LME light
Might last you a long time.
OK I dont do it myself but I was recommended a UJSSM / LME recipe that uses:
100 litres of wash / 10 kg sugar / 20 kg grain / 4.5 kg LME.
That big 25 kg batch of LME could last for a few runs!! The price is OK though. Does it have a "best before" date?

Re: LME light
I got lazy for a while in my beer brewing, and have used a couple of these.
It can be difficult to pour, especially when cool/cold, and can get a bit messy. so if you can, bring indoors to warm up, then decant into smaller containers, I used 5 litre ex Tesco water bottles. means you only open it once, so reduces the risk of nasty's getting in.

I have done this once using a smaller purchase of LME.
I Used 4kg of LME and 1 kg sugar
1/2 tin of bakers yeast and then nuked over jd chips. It turned out with a nice flavour so I thought I would have another go.
