Ok, this may be slightly off tack but I've recently seen a fab wee garden torch/lamp at a greatly reduced price.
It runs on alcohol which is what triggered my interest but on closer inspection it's actually "bioethanol gel" or thickened alcohol that's used. This is (of course!) bought separately.

You can probably guess where this question is heading!

Has anyone heard of, or tried making alcohol gel for the purposes of longer and safer burning times?

Here's my take Jenny. Think Hand Gel, the guys were
making it using Glycerine I think, Mash is the man.
Proof of Spirit, if you have 100 proof it lights and
burns evenly, ie: Royal Navy Gunpowder and 100 proof
Gin.

Completely off the WALL.
Try mixing wallpaper paste flakes/powder with hearts?

I think it will need to be 60% ish.... And yeah wallpaper paste...Or xanthan powder.

You will need to fiddle to get the ratio right.

I had found the calcium acetate info too but it hadn't been dissolved into solution. A lot of the comments were just saying that it precipitated out and didn't burn very well.

I can see a bit of kitchen chemistry coming on!
I wonder if if would work in that lamp. I really liked the look of it but don't know if I can justify £50 for a cool spinning table flame

With the official fuel it's meant to be either. I'm not convinced a home made version would be completely fume free though so probably outside

Alcohol Gel = Napalm. You might have a hard time explaining it away to the Anti Terrorist police


Used indoors... Any naked flame will five off Carbon Monoxide. Not the best of things to have in an enclosed space.
I certainly would want to have a CO detector located close by.

I made a load of Alcohol gel last year when it was a rare thing..
The first batch was a bit thick you could almost throw it like a rubber ball.

Anyway I used Carbomer and Triethanolamine (TEA) both readily available off fleabay.

The Carbomer is the thickening agent, the TEA alters the PH so the Carbomer thickens.
