Rattus Norvegicus!!

Went to check on my brew last night, and disturbed a rascally little burglar working its way into my bag of cracked corn!! My fault for leaving it out, but having said that, I always have done and have never had so much as a little mouse in my shed. Anyway, he soon scooted out of the hole he'd chewed in my shed, and I put the bag of corn safely into a spare FV, and locked the shed up, determined to block the hole today.
When I unlocked the shed this morning the bar steward had been back with a vengence! There was a silver foil vacuum sealed bag of smoked barley that he'd chewed through in about four different places, spilling the contents all over the place, and he'd knocked things over in his efforts at finding stuff to eat. Fortunately thats all there WAS for him to eat. On top of all that, while I was moving stuff away to allow me access to repair his entrance, the little sod let me know he was still there and made his escape, although by now he was fatter and had to struggle to get out! :D :D
Anyway, the hole is repaired, spilled grain hoovered up, anything edible stowed away, and my brew is going along nicely.
We have three cats, and also some others visiting from time to time......useless! :P

I store stuff outside. Old stockpots are good containers.

I always like to leave them some welcome "Special" feed out for them.

I would not have expected you to know that jacquie.
You must be a little older than you look. :)
Maybe it was in your parents record collection when you were growing up?

Coming back to Mr Rat..
Once upon a time, I stepped into the breach to try and keep a small, specialised, (physically challenged guests for the most part), hotel running.

One morning, a big old rat was watching me, from the middle of the kitchen floor.
I moved some boxes and bulk cases. and trapped it behind a chest freezer.

I despatched said rodent with a few blows to the head from a snooker cue.
Alex Higgins style.
Not that my game improved after.

My girly staff never knew any of this.
Am I a bad person.?

Robert.

In a different life, at a different time, Robert, I would have done the exact same thing, in fact, I've done a lot worse, things which still haunt me to this day! :( But whether it's an age thing or what, or becoming more aware of my own mortality, I don't know, but I've developed an appreciation and a love for all living things that might be seen as extreme to some, but I'm glad I feel this way.....anyhoo...I won't be killing mr rat, if he persists on breaking into my shed, I'll buy a humane trap and take him down to the canal and let him go. But if he decides to hang around and help himself to the compost heaps, he's very welcome. :D :D

I admit to singing the song as I did the deed.
At the time I only knew the version from UB40,
StillDaves link was obviously the song that they covered.
I cannot guess at StillDaves life experience, and so won't.

Myself, I however have a life view of pest and vermin.
I currently have a captive magpie in a licenced Larsen trap.
Well fed and watered, shielded from the worst of the weather.
I believe that it has caught/attracted all of it's siblings that flew into this neck of the woods a few weeks ago, and it's days are numbered.
And boy!, do we have other birds since I have been taking out magpies, over the last few years.

Later this week I will start my seasonal winter work of trapping moles on a few local farms.
Some may consider it a dirty job.
I expect to catch several hundred, maybe more.
I have no problem sleeping.
And am probably one of the softest guys you could ever hope to meet.
Perspective. :)

You are correct mash.
Closer inspection shows that the version StillDave linked to was recorded in 2001. :)

No gaz,
We are simply seekers of the ultimate truth.
Now, you do pose a philosophical question...
Would we Rat on each other?
I would like to think not. :D
