Fitness run

I’m guessing this topic will crash like a lead balloon, I decided not to trick you all and put it under distilling!

During this pandemic I seem to have accumulated a few extra pounds, one theory is that the closing of barbers shops is responsible. I had a Covid-19 haircut from missus W yesterday evening and checked before and after on the bathroom scales. They must be broken because there was no change. However SWMBO confirmed they were working correctly. So this morning with the saying “The only time we have is now!” and with a heavy heart (or was that gut) I set off pounding the tarmac. After a couple of minutes that was not the only thing pounding! I live on the side of a hill and chose ‘up’ as the start.

I’m going to be back at work towards the end of the week so opportunities for exercise will plummet, so it is going to have to be a two pronged approach and cut back on carbs, alcohol and especially beer!

How do you guys manage to shed pounds?

Hey Windoe, I don't know your starting fitness levels so might be off the mark, but have you considered couch to 5k?
I did it 4-5 years ago to get into running and haven't looked back. I even got my 68 year old ma doing it at the start of the year and she completed it. I've since increased the distance to the point I've done lots of 10ks, half marathons and both a marathon and a 50 mile non stop walk.
I also do a lot of Obstacle Course events (Tough Mudder things) although these have been sadly lacking this year.
Oh and swimming too, which again has had to stop, used to do a kilometre in my lunchbreak a couple times a week.

At the moment it's really just running though. And although I can run further than some people, I am overweight but also stubborn rather than fit :p

Lockdown belly is definitely a thing! :?
We've just started couch to 5k to try and tackle it but think it's going to need much more than that. Extra baking with the kids probably isn't helping either

Lol, I once had a South African boss who said “You have a finite number of heartbeats lad, I don’t propose wasting any of mine jock-strapping” He had a point! Ex RAF navigator who on one occasion rapidly left the aircraft wearing the seat after the pilot decided to bang out. The Navigator gets no say in the matter! I guess he must have had to do some jock strapping in his time. That was one of his more politically correct statements.

DorsetScott, I think my fitness level lies between your ma’s and way below yours. My target is to do 200km in total in June, work permitting. I have done it once in the past but can generally do 100km if I put my mind to it. I find it too easy to procrastinate when faced with putting on the trainers!

If you're aiming for 200km in a month then you'd give me a "run" for my money for sure. That's no mean feat!
What's the plan, 2-3 10ks in the week and a longer run at the weekend or more miles at the weekend?

Gaza, each to his/her own ability and desire. I am not saying I will achieve my goal, but setting one is the first step. It’s a shame there are so many steps after!

No plan as such because work generates such a random schedule. I know I have to average 20K every three days and avoid getting injured. Beyond that it is suck it and see!

I'm way too old and fat to run anywhere but need to try harder to lose weight  looks like it will have to be more abstinence and a bit more walking for me.
Bumped into my mate's son who weighed well over 20st last time I saw him. He was told by his quack to lose weight or risk diabetes and losing body parts. So, he went on a crash diet of only eating ham sarnies. He limited himself to one ham sandwich........per week  He did that for 4 or 5 weeks. He lost over 7 stone and gained enough lose skin to make a pair of matching suitcases with (probably). I would have thought such a rapid weight loss would have caused him problems but he said he felt great. Just imagine how much resolve it takes to do that. If I miss just a couple of meals I could eat a scabby dog. Good on him eh.

I'm getting old and losing my memory, I may have posted something similar to this on the old site...
A few years ago a neighbour died.
On the day of his funeral I was gobsmacked to discover that the suit, previously worn for a wedding 6 months earlier, no longer fitted.
Since then, I daily note my weight, and try not to over-eat.
Eating is not the issue.
I can easily drink a thousand calories or more a day.
I live a fairly active life, but my OCD habit of noting my weight shows me that I am still in the same weight range.
Two days ago, I even started doing sit-ups again!
I am around 7 pounds over-weight, and it all resides around my belly.
This summer I am determined to shed this excess, work on the suntan, and once again become the love god that I once was.  :ugeek:
Sadly, it means lowering my alcohol intake.
That is harder than skipping a burger or two. :(

Robert.

As I anticipated work kiboshed a couple of days of jogging and the weather could have crippled my plan was it not for a treadmill. I hate running on a treadmill, I find it ten times harder than down the road or across country. During the first run my mind wandered first to Gaza, then Nursey and finally Benny Hill!

Went on the scales today and not an ounce lost! Looks like the Ham Sarnie diet for me.

Not the dread mill!!! Remember weight lost and cardio gained are not directly correlated. You could be turning fat to muscle, and your weight wouldn't move. Number on a scale is not the thing to focus on. Measurements are better.

Managed to get the kids (7 and 9) out on a 10k walk/run for a virtual event on Sunday. 9 year old moaned the entire way, 7 year old with a runners physique (she didn't get that from me or her mum, wonder who the dad is 😂) loved it until she started to struggle 8km in. The hills were probably evil 😁

Used to watch the kids here shout,"Watch me run up the hill!"
About 800 meteres and 1 in 10.
They did it for fun.
I now find walking it hard work. :)

I kicked my stone threshold running for a crap and broke my toe a while back. Running is dangerous and should be avoided, like pushbiking which is sat down running :warning:

Any unnecessary rapid movement goes against " The Drinking Mans Code
Of Honour", and should be punished by death, slow and painful.
Well they are torturing themselves anyway, we might as well help 'em out.

I like to combine the 2 activities.
Last year I did the Great British Beerathon

It was a great laugh and I wasn't sick

Hi All
I must be one of the fittest here or mabye just the daftest. I clock 350/400 kilometers a week on the road bycycle and have presently broken the 7.000 kms for the year so far. The biggest kick I get out of it is when Im finished I just settle down with a few (sometimes many) pints or halfs. Well thats my take on it.
Regards
RM

Nah, cycling is basically cheating :p "running" man indeed :D :D

I jest, that is some major mileage. I tend to do less than half that each month with commuting, don't think I could do that distance. I did have a place in the Prudential Ride 100 this year, but that was cancelled a couple of weeks ago

Hi Robert
The Runningman came from my younger years when I was a fanatical road and cross country runner. Done 10 marathons in my time clocking my fastest at the age of 39 2hrs 32 minutes at Glasgow. I took up cycling when my running days ended due to dodgy knees and have been cycling ever since. Im now a cycling fanatic. HA HA HA
