Spent the weekend helping a pair of Swallows bunk up next to some friendly neighbours.
We have a lot of sites that I consider suitable for nesting, but NO!
This year, three nests to the cubic foot, attached to a smooth timber, that sheds it's nest each year, often costing a clutch of chicks.
This year I supported the first two, and when the jaw dropping third appeared, during a dry spell, over the week-end, and they tried to build with the wrong type of mud, well l just had to step in again.
Watching their hours of work fall to the ground moved me.
In stages, between us, they mud, and me, wire and mesh, we are almost there.
These beauties have flown from Africa to eat my flies.
I hate flies and am happy to assist.

I know of 12 active nests this year, and that is a lot of flies that won't bother me!
And for the record, I am not soft!

Great stuff Robert, it's good to lend a hand. Yonks ago I put a window in a barn conversion project and on a wall was the dates that the swallows arrived and when they went going back to just after WW1. The owner said he planned to put a frame round it and add to the dates. Awesome I absolutely love things like that.

the common site they were when I was a kid..

The way of the world Gaza, so much has changed just in my lifetime. When I was a lad I was with my girlf on the bankside of the river Tweed in kelso when we realized we were surrounded by and covered in thousands of little elvers wriggling through the grass and up my girlfs skirt (beat me to it) so we had to leave . They are an endangered species today, and eels are too.

A tentative first fire up today Mash. No torpeado or Dephlegmator yet.
Just using water flow on the condenser and Power Controller.

It is just fascinating watching the product dance, better than T.V.
My bro said that looks like a mad laboratory experiment, so we have
called her, Frankenstill.

Saw a huge glass column on YouTube today whilst looking for torpedoes/ bubble cap stuff and trying to understand them. It was mesmerising watching each plate fill one after the other .
It's not often I get jealous of another blokes column but I got an inferiority complex looking at the size of his size isn't everything though, is it, is it?
I also saw a bloke fitting a bubble plate into his sight glass too and thought that was novel, its virtually the same as a torpedo in it?

Don't know what you run BB, but this new set up is a bit of a half way house.
Bolier T500 2KW. weldless 2" adapter to a 2-4-2 4 bubble Torpeado(All Copper)
to a four plate glass columnto a 200mm Dephlegmator to thermometer to a
600mm Condenser. Very Happy trying to put pics up but no good at computers.
All in £630 which in comparison to DS Crystal is cheap.

Fun day today - I had to do an online training course - basically watch a video presentation, write stuff down, watch more stuff, take test, watch more stuff etc etc.

Figured I could do it on my laptop as I didn't need the multiple screens etc I need for client support. And if I can use my laptop then I don't have to be in my office sooo

0910 I fired the bolier up with a charge of low wines from netural, UJSSM, early gen rum low wines etc etc

1855 switched the boiler off with 22 jars of 94% or better.

Went for a very long steady equalisation as I had time and I think I've compressed the heads into the first 1.5 litres - time and taste will tell

And two passes on the tests

Hey Gaza I run a basic modular set up, 1m reflux column and pot with thumper at the mo. Happy but looking to improve.

Nest finished, being lined with soft stuff today.
The least aesthetic swallows nest of all time, maybe.
Birdies happy, I'm happy.
