Distilling with GF or T500

Post by DistillingChris »

Hi, I’ve all but decided to take the plunge and get the Grainfather , one to start making spirits from grains etc but also to make non spirits aswell, I know you can distill with a GF but has anybody got one and does it work just aswell as the T500? You just swap lids? Or can it be used to distill but not as good as that isn’t it’s primary function?

If so I may be selling the T500 as I don’t need 2 of the same then, although could just be the boiler part if I’m keeping the copper reflux and il probably but the additional copper pot attatchment aswell as I don’t want to strip the flavour when making whiskey etc
Also have the small air still i will probably sell which I haven’t used since getting the t500

I believe the GF is slightly more capable than the T500 boiler (out of the box) from my reading.
The GF controller has the ability to switch to power mode from temperature mode which means you don't need an additional voltage regulator which I believe most members of the forum here use.
I use a Brewzilla with a mod on it for stillin. Post on the mod is a few down in the general chat. I had to do this to get power control, but would do it again at half the price of the GF.

It is a simple as swapping lids.

Have you considered keeping the airstill for Gin? With a sputnik it's a powerful little tool to have.
I'm not under the affluence of incahol, thinkle only peep I am. Its just the drunker I sit here the longer I get.

I cannot put it better.

It is a pity you cannot convert the T500 boiler to mash grain, but its prolly to big a mod, as you really need and pump and a controller.

Sounds good to me, after reading up some more yes looks like the gf could actually be better at distilling than the t500 as you have more control over things so looks like il be selling it plus always nice to help fund the GF

To be honest gin is probably the only drink I don’t drink :P but If I was to do it I’d prob then do it in the gf as the air still is great to learn on which I did but I feel a lot of effort for not much spirit with it only being 4L but I guess could be good for recipe making and tweaking before doing a big batch of the one that turns out the best maybe
