Your first wash
Can you remember your first wash? Mine was a school project many decades ago. We arranged a visit to the local whisky distillery and cadged some yeast from them for experiments in the chemistry lab. We did two series of experiments based on the chemistry of brewing and of distillation. Back then schools were licensed to carry out distillation for educational purposes and we found enough glasswear to keep 4 of us happy every few weeks as batches were run. Happy days.

Re: Your first wash
For me, some apples from the garden aged 12, + some bread yeast from the pantry.
Bucket in the bottom of my wardrobe.
It had mostly finisked fizzing before I drank the juice and ate the pulp.
And there started my life-long fascination with alcohol.
My school at that timel had bottles of 95% methanol freely available on every biology bench.
I must admit to partaking.
Naughty boy.
Robert.

Mine wasn't a wash as such but used to make cider with mi grandad when I was little. Off to the fiepd to pick apples on the tractor, run them through a chopper in the garage down into the press in the cellar and into barrels. Only started distilling 2 months ago so the turbo carbon wash is hard to forget but I'm trying

95% methanol? Is that what made you blind?

You may have to Braille that by me one more time!
I have drunk shit that would kill a concrete Elephant.
But I do not reccomend it.
I had a hangover once, 40 years ago, just the once.
Functional alcoholism is something that you may be lucky to spot in your rear view mirror.
I have lowered my alcohol tolerence by many points in recent years.
Quality, not quantity, is my current catch phrase.
Stay safe.

Beer & Country wine making was on the go at home as I grew up.
My first, was a recipe from a mates dad. 1 tin of pears in syrup, 1 bag of sugar, 1/2 cup of cold black tea. 1 DJ.
It worked well. I then perfected a similar recipe but with a bottle of ribena. Which made up like Mateus Rose..... Which the ladies quite liked.... And for a lad of 18 was... Well quite handy .....
Happy days.

Much like Mash with all the country wines, then beer full time, but my first mash would have been a sugar wash. I popped into our local HBS back around
2010 I think, Peter who ran it started talking about this new gadget he had that turned out to be an Airstill. Needless to say I was hooked, bought it there & then, went home and started a sugar wash as per the Still Smart recipe....

Sounds like we all got into the brewing game at young ages, at the age of 10 I remember regularly making something called saspirella, it came as an extract in a little jar, I don't remember it being alcoholic but you did ferment it in a demijohn so I suppose it could have been.
