Yooo Chooob
As a total nooob to distilling, I have, as you can imagine been gathering as much information as possible prior to my first run and one of those sources has been the blessed You Tube.
I was wondering what your favourite YT content providers are and if you'd like to share them with us all ?
I'll kick off with this chap, despite his unusual style of presentation he seems to have some valid and important information to impart and is quite entertaining to watch.

Re: Yooo Chooob
If I can say, respectfully, if you read this site, you don't need the un-regulated postings of YouTube.
By all means watch them.
Feel free to share them here.
I won't be clicking your links very often.
Accept the difference between a forum of helpful members and a platform of strangers that post weird and whacky stuff, maybe just for hoped for revenue?
Remember, this site is donor funded and not for profit.
For safety, health and maybe even a little love.
Prolly made gaza blush there!
Just sayin'.
Robert.

Thanks Robert I didn't know how to answer this post.
Can I wholeheartedly second that.
We don't allow wacky ideas to go unchallenged here, we are about safety and facts, not myth.
Please don't be offended Steve, pull up a stool, grab drink from the bar and let's get you going.
What is the drink you want to make?

Re: Yooo Chooob
I agree that there is a lot of crap on youtube. There is also some diamonds amongst the rough.
To re-inforce this, I would urge some caution on Barley and Hops. From the few videos I've seen he does seem to have quite an element of "Richard from Love Brewing" about him.
There is distaste for Youtube on this forum, and given the large amounts of garbage on there I understand why.
I would however argue that a channel/s, recommended and even agreed upon by people from this forum who understand what we are about is a benefit to those who wish to use this medium. I also understand why that is unlikely to happen too.
I have learnt a lot through Still Smarter and I like to think I have started to be of some value to some people as my knowledge progresses.
I have also learnt through the channel I recommended.
Sometimes watching someone do what you have learnt in theory reinforces that learning.
In fact if Still Smarter was a youtube channel, we'd be that one.
However I tend to use it as a "programme" on a subject I am interested in.
Not everything someone watches on a subject has to be educational.
I agree that you don't "need" a youtube channel to learn this craft, but other mediums can be useful to supliment forums such as this one.

Re: Yooo Chooob
I quite like a wee look at Still It sometimes.
He seems to be more experimenting and letting folks know what he finds tbh.
But I think he started over on HD so picked up necessary safety info etc before he started.

I am not against You Tube, and this is not the original link that I found, but when I have time, may be a thread I follow.

Re: Yooo Chooob
I can understand some peoples reluctance to take onboard some of the stuff on You Tube as a persons channel is their own creation/opinion, as is someone's right to believe what they are hearing.... Or not.
I tend to use the three points of contact rule, ie, if you see it on YT, read it on a forum and read it in a published book then it's reasonable to take it as a valid method.

Re: Yooo Chooob
I can also see why many aren't keen on YT, there is a lot of crap. Equally, for the new distiller, some of those suggestions and claims can be very confusing to the uninitiated.Steve1262 wrote: Sat Jun 12, 2021 7:50 am I can understand some peoples reluctance to take onboard some of the stuff on You Tube as a persons channel is their own creation/opinion, as is someone's right to believe what they are hearing.... I'd say that to be of use, the viewer would need to have at least a base level of knowledge, so they can recognise the difference between "good ideas" that may be worth exploring and blatant stupidity/practices that can lead to mistakes that have the potential to be costly (the term F.A.E. aka fuel/air explosive).
After all, the recent "Boom" thread demonstrated the power of even a small amount of vacuum.
Your alluding to "3 points of contact" above is a wise suggestion. Sort of a "measure twice, cut once" thing. Except it's not just the cost of the materials that needs considering

Re: Yooo Chooob
That, phantom, was one of your sagest posts.
And I have read them all, going back to 2008, on this sites mothership.
In this technology (and comercially) driven age, folk should ensure that they have a well rounded understanding of potentially harmful hobbies.
We have acquirred many members who bought an "Airstill" and followed the included instructions.
And discovered that they were drinking alcohol piss.
They come here and we help.
They either find the answers in our archives or ask, and someone answers.
Many don't join us, but just read the site, find their answers, and leave.
We have a high number of guests every day.
And that is fine, if we have helped someone to stay safe and enjoy a new hobby, I am not going to complain.
And we don't smack them in the face with advertising.
Does anyone here watch Youtube without an AdBlocker?
How tedious is that?
Robert.

Re: Yooo Chooob
Love watching some of the distilling channels on the tube.
Whilst there is some right old crap, I think some of it is brilliant.
Jesse distilling scotlands national drink ... Iron Brew the other week made me larf !
Highly recommend using "New pipe" for watching youtube.
Just like youtube premium but better and free. No adverts , no region blocking.
I have it installed on my smart tv, tablet phone etc

Re: Yooo Chooob
Adblock plus works so well for me (Firefox) that I hit the donate button last week, after many years.
I don't expect everything that I find on the internet to be for free.
And am happy to donate to geeks that can create stuff that makes my life easier.

Have a tech. savvy friend, who often show's me shite, that he has found on Youtube, on my laptop, who asked me why my Youtube was better than his.
Adblockplus.

Re: Yooo Chooob
I refuse to use the phone as a computer.
And my current one is considered to be very smart and rugged and can take photos a metre under water.
Mine is for calls, texting and camera, when I don't have the DSLR.
Email on the phone?
Watch your life leach away as you then can't be parted from it.
I compartmentalise stuff.
I watch friends who seem more tied to a phone than real life.
I live life a little more chilled.
Robert
