Try chicken grit (or oyster shells of the beach) fantastic.. And what it doesn't need gets left in the bottom and can be reused.

I tried oyster shell a couple of months back in two washes, didn't work for me.

We are into water chemistry.
You need to rebalance it to solve the problem.
Probably worth getting your water report from the authority.

Have you tried 2 teaspoons of bicarb, once it swings?

Done the water chemistry off S Trent ....tried bicarb...I wouldn't say it's a problem, just a nuisance.
