Help - I'm getting some Barley!

Hi guys (and gals),
I'm having a Senior Moment, and want to know how useful Un-malted Barley is?
Now.... OK, I know I need some Malted barley for the enzymes etc, but can I use Un-malted Barley to good effect?

Basically a local farmer whose Farm Wifi we look after has said I can have some in return for a bottle or two of beer.

I think I might be getting 50Kg or more to play with. So getting a plan in place and the other ingredients together before its harvest time will be my starting point.
I have also thought about whether using it with Angel Yellow yeast as they use that with straight (un-malted) rice.

I suppose I could also make some beer as well.

Finally, I have thought about whether I could home malt it, as I have a smoker, and thought I might be able to use that somewhere in the process.

SO.... Thoughts, Ideas, and pointers to any recipes or tips that I would find useful to produce something nice.

You could malt it...Or buy some chickens 🤣🤣

It will add flavour, definitely. Spicy & fruity notes.
You should run it with not less than 50% malted, it should convert OK.

Yeast choice might be important to help the flavour profile.

You have got me thinking I might have to have a go myself using it as an adjunct ..... Tbh never thought of using unmalted barley.

What are you making beer or Whisky?

Seem to recall a wine making recipe that uses barley.

Not sure where I read it or saw it, but I suspect it'd only be a Google search away.

Good question! I haven't thought this through yet, hence asking for suggestions / info etc.
Possibly a bit of both.
I dont think I can turn down free grain!

If this comes good, it wont happen until harvest time in a month or so.

"Can't turn down free grain"...50kg is a lot to sit on a shelf of you can't use it. 😁😁

But it will keep well.

You need to think about conditioning it and crushing it, even if you don't malt it!

You could grind it into flour and bake with it.

Mash, I am not sure how much is on offer, but as he is a farmer, I expect 50Kgs wont cause a big dent in his harvest figures.
I have a grain crusher and a flour mill. So shouldn't be a problem.
But still a good point.
I was thinking of keeping the grain whole and in one of my airtight barrels, as crushing it exposes the germ(?) in the middle to the air.

Hopefully when my life gets a bit quieter later this year I will be brewing up some beer and things.

I don't know how often you brew or mash.
I would expect that you could mix in un-malted with malted judiciously,
Don't think I would bother trying to malt my own grain, unless I had a lot of time to spare.

Spot on. But make sure it's properly dry.. Ask him for the moisture rating (he will know)

"Grain conditioning" would be a good Google.. Will tell you how to wet it a bit, before milling.

That's what I was going to do. I don't have the room to do malting, so will mix it in with the malted barley I already have.
Not sure on the ratio of malted to unmalted though. Between X and Y info would be useful to know, as it would give me a starting point.
