Good news yesterday....

Post by Icefever »

I've been feeling under the weather for the last couple of months, tired, having no energy, and having a few other problems. Spoke to the doc and she had me in for a massive blood test :o about 5 bottles  that's what it looked & felt like.

Our surgery lets you log on and see your records/test results, I checked yesterday and all 9 tests came back negative. I must admit I was shocked to see the tests for liver & kidneys were spot on. Of late it's been way too easy to have 3 maybe 4 large rum & ginger most nights after our evening meal.

No, I don't get pi**ed, not even merry... but it does make you think about what the health folks say about how much we should be drinking. I have cut right back, I started about 2 weeks back, and now it's just a glass of wine with our meal, then a nightcap before bed, the first one last night. ;)

I've said before that this hobby of ours does make it very, very easy, too easy in fact to overdo our drinking....I'm now staying on this side of the fence.

Stay safe..

Ice. 8-)

Glad to hear its good news.

I know what you mean, as I can see my results too.
My diabetes numbers shot up to nearly 70 from 46.
Its now back down again, due to increased tablets and a 10Kg weight loss. Dr did the tabs, I did the weight loss without telling him!

So I celebrated by making 1Kg of Fudge! Its hard trying not to eat it all in one go!

Glad to see your numbers are looking good.

TBH... when you said how much.. I immediately thought "That's nearly and armful" as I had a flash of Tony Handcock in the Blood Donor!
Take care and stay well.

  That and fork handles are a couple of the best ;) , I must admit I was thinking "this will be it"....and diabetes was one along with the prostate, but like I said all is well. I did drop a stone & half about 4 years back but it's back on, I've been watching what I'm eating for the last week.

ps...send the fudge....

Evening Icefever

Long time no speak, glad your in good health, I’m just making my seemingly annual visit to the forum, I haven’t distilled a drop this year but I do have a 40lt wash sitting in my boiler so thats got to count for something 😂

Maybe I’ll strip it at the weekend before it evaporates as it’s been there a week already!!

Need some Xmas Vodka which is probably what I made this time last year!!

Nowt wrong with an annual visit, Adele doesn't even manage an annual album 🤣🤣

I am panicking trying to get enough beer ready for Christmas. The hot summer has played havoc with the water supply (hardness & alkalinity) and I have been playing catchup.

Hopefully we might scrape through, but I worry for your 40 litre fermentation.... Are you sure that's enough?

Hi Mash

It’s the first of two 40lt wash’s, I normally make 3 for a neutral run but been lazy this time!

My house, including my garage has had a new roof this year, the mess it made in my garage was unbelievable, dust and bits of rubble all over home brew gear, you could look up through the rafters and see the underside of the old tiles, I even stapled a massive dust sheet to the rafters but it still got everywhere, it took me weeks to clean it all out and get it ready for brewing,

Hopefully back on track now 👍🏻

On the plus side and related to this thread I’ve spent a lot of time over the last couple of years researching and learning about metabolic health, having been diagnosed type 2 diabetic in may 2020, I refused the medication and took matters into my own hands.

I didn’t get another blood test until October 2020 but in that time I managed to loose 2 1/2 stone and reverse my diabetes with diet alone, I’ve been fascinated by the subject ever since.

If anyone want any advice, drop me a message, anyone can drastically improve if not reverse the condition with the right diet, if Ionly follow the standard treatment offered by the NHS, I afraid to say I would probably still be diabetics, and worse than when I started!

Anavrin me old mate....what a great surprise :+1:

Brilliant news about the illness, I was warned back around 2015 that I was borderline diabetic, I lost a stone & half which helped to check it. The last load of tests didn't show anything in that region so far so good. Then 2 weeks back we both caught the Flu  funny thing is...both of us had our jabs 2 days before :o :o makes you think :?: . It's been a barstool as well, leaving both of us with a hacking cough for days I think it'll be another week before we're clear of it.

Funny that I have a 40 ltr wash that needs stripping also, checked it yesterday and it looks ok. I may pull my finger out today and get on and do it, anyway don't leave it another year you old reprobate   ;)

Brick dust. That must have been terrible. I cannot even imagine cleaning all my brewing equipment.

Excellent news about the diabetes. Well done you. I have refused statins for cholesterol, and have reduced the eggs in my diet to try and kirb it. Does metabolic health cover cholesterol too? Do you have any recommended reading or suggestions?

Welcome back.

Hi Mash

I also refused Statins but I don’t avoid eating eggs or any other cholesterol containing foods!

You may not believe this at first but the “Diet Cholesterol Heart Hypothesis” is a complete fabrication that’s hoodwinked medical professionals and governments the world over.

I apologise if I’m about to send you down the rabbit hole but there has never been one single randomised controlled clinical trail that has proved a link between Saturated Fat, Cholesterol and Cardiovascular Disease! Despite hundreds of millions of research dollars trying to prove that it does!

Check out the following books

The big fat surprise by Nina Teicholz

A Statin Free Life by Dr Aseem Malhotra

Finally one I’m reading this week which describes the real cause of atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) that leads to heart attacks and strokes

The Clot Thickens by Malcolm Kendrick

All are available on Audiable, so if your like me and don’t have the time to read you can listen in the car or something.

Watch this YouTube video from an amarican cardiologist, he’s spot on

You’ll also find the book authors have a lot of YouTube content

Your going to wish you never asked 😂

I have an old friend, taking statins for years, caused him numerous problems.

About 2 years ago he started eating more oats in his diet. Porridge every day in the morning. Now eats porridge as a desertnwith fresh fruit in the evenings. This has caused him to loose some weight as he feels 'full'. He sleeps better. He has Whisky in his porridge at the weekends. Raspberry Gin in porridge on those evenings, likes it cold with cream in the evenings.

Hasn't been taking statins for about the same period.

He has a new doctor now who has recently questioned him on why he was ever prescribed them?

Sounds like you also discovered the 2 ideas of what causes various issues. Why it was that the west side of the pond finds the issue was connected to excess dietary sugar, while this side connected it to saturated fats.

Yet it seems that both are possible causes. So perhaps it's more about the food ethos from the oriental end of Asia, where balance of flavour types in food is more important.

Equally, they know of the sugar connection to both excess weight, diabetes etc (read up about type 2 in India - they have a massive problem), so why there's no peer reviewed research for the same, just with saturated fats is rather curious.

Oh and it doesn't seem to matter how well you seal any possible dust out during building/roofing work, the bloody dust still seems to make its way onto every available surface (we've had both done in the last 10 years with that result - and now we're waiting on scaffolding to get the exterior re-screeded and pebble dashing replaced - so likely more cleaning sessions will be needed).

It’s our modern diet, full of processed carbohydrates, sugar and seed oils.

We didn’t evolve as a species over the last 3 million years eating carbs everyday! In nature carbs become available in the autumn to help us fatten up to survive the winter, these days winter never comes!

I eat a low carb, heathy fat diet, by heathy fat I mean saturated fat from animal sources, coconut oil and olive oil, try to avoid anything else, which means bacon and eggs is a regular staple 👍🏻

My egg habit was possibly a bit excessive at upto 5 some days.

I have ordered "The clot thickens", sounds very readable as well as having good content. Scanning the Internet made me realise something was up. Hopefully I can get a did more informed about it.

Thank you!

This is the problem with modern medical care, Doctors are very good at proscribing pills to treat various symptoms, but they don’t tackle the underlying root cause of the disease!

For example Type 2 diabetes is a combination of insulin resistance and Hyperinsulinemia (high insulin in the blood), all the medications and treatments are aimed at controlling blood sugar, but high blood glucose is a symptom, not the root cause.

So how do reverse T2D? Lower insulin by not eating carbohydrates, including intermittent fasting, this restores insulin sensitivity and is quickly followed by some significant weight loss as a bonus.

My fiend who has porridge frequently, still drinks 25+ pints of Guinness each week. No Statins still. He also rides a bike and is near 70 years old. Don't know exact age, do not want to ask in case he takes offence and chases me.

Hi Mash

Total cholesterol by itself is a worthless number and does not predict the risk of heart disease with any certainty, what has been shown to be a much better predictor is the ratio of LDL to HDL, ideally you want the ratio to be less than 4:1.

Have a quick google of Total Cholesterol HDL Ratio

A high or low HDL ( higher is better ) is a much better predictor of risk than a high or Low LDL

There very clear evidence that cholesterol is protective as you age, clinical trials have shown all cause mortality increases the more you lower it!

Crazy as it sounds, statins are a trillion dollar business and the power and influence of the pharmaceutical companies cannot be underestimated.

There’s also a very clever guy called Dave Feldman who’s done a lot of Cholesterol hacking, mainly on himself!

He’s shown that it’s not a static number, you can hack it with your diet depending on what you eat in the days leading up to the test, eat a high calorie, high carb diet and it will lower, eat a high fat Keto diet and it will increase, he’s currently involved in some clinical trails, search for lean mass hyper responders and you’ll come across his work.

Similar to me, I got from HbA1C of 63 down to 38, also lost just over 2 stone, I also cyst out the carbs/sugar, and beer for a good few months, I also did a lot of intermittent fasts, up to 3 days of a couple of occasions, it’s the best way to burn off the belly fat.

It’s the visceral fat around the organs (mainly the Liver and Pancreas) that causes insulin resistance and T2D

Thanks for your posts. Will give Dave Feldman a look up.

The book is good reading by the way and I would say, don't be put off by the medical "bits" it is very well written to be understood by mortals. (tada😁)

My cholesterol level was 2 when I had my heart attack.
Have you tried turning it off and back on again?
