Shipping home spirits abroad
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone has sent some of their home distilled spirits to the US by post or courier?
A few months ago we had a visitor from America and they brought a bottle of their homemade moonshine over in a suitcase in the hold of the plane. They said they had no problems, but also didn’t declare it.
I was just wondering if there was any way I could send them back a bottle of my stuff in the mail through the post office or a courier for them to have without any hassle?
I’m happy enough to not declare it, has anyone any experience of this?
Thanks, POITÍN

Experience of travel to an from the states, never smuggled any hooch, or posted anything. Sounds very risky to me.
The British rozzers are quite chilled about our hobby, but the yanks? Too much of a risk for me.

Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

Ooh, the America's. I have a recollection that they are one of the few British territories where the average age at death is decreasing and where they are accepting all the aspects of dementia, giving the most aged a nuclear button.
Don't worry we can revoke their citizenship if they object, just put the grog on the next galley over there. X

I’m in two minds about sending a bottle over… I wonder if I put it in a Jameson bottle with the duty stamps on it would they pay less attention??

If you really are serious I would go 500ml no more. In a water or pop bottle and reseal.

Sent wines/meads west before now. Just wrapped them really well and marked the declaration as commercial sample.
That arrived fine.
Perhaps just use a "different" return address etc ?

You can not send alcohol “spirits” overseas.
I sent a friend in America a bottle of my whiskey
and 2.weeks later the post office called me and asked me to go in and see them about a parcel. I was nervous and had a feeling it was about the alcohol I had posted.
When I arrived they gave me the parcel back and said “you can’t send alcohol”.
Strange thing is it was in a glass bottle and I had wrapped tape around the lid just in case it leaked. I noticed the bottle had not been opened as the blue tape I used was not disturbed in any way.
So they must have some kind of machine/scanner/xray that can detect alcohol somehow.

Re: Shipping home spirits abroad
Mash have you been able to successfully send homemade distilled spirits overseas with no issues ?
Re: Shipping home spirits abroad
No. Tbh I havn't tried.
I was surprised they could detect it in a bottle without removing the tape. Just wondered if the bottle gave it away.
Internally it ships well vaccuum packed in bags. Did that a few years ago.
