Coffee Bags.

I like real coffee. I have not consumed instant coffee this year.

I have an old fashioned percolator, I put 2 scoops (16g) of coffee in, it produces 2 big cups of coffee in 5 minutes on the hob.

When I am in a rush I use coffee bags, Percol, Taylor's of Harrogate or similar. They cost typically £3-4 for 10 or £6 for 20 so say 35p per cup. I would say the coffee bags do not have the same flavour as my percolated coffee.

The coffee I buy for my percolator is app £3 for 227g. At 8g per cup the coffee in my cup costs 10p.

Coffee from Starfucks, Costa tastes like shit, burnt and ash, Nero is better but not much. The fresh coffee flavour is lost by the extreme steam heat, the cup full of coffee debris which is evident at the bottom of the cup if you drink black coffee. The coffee tastes of powder. Filter coffee is sometimes available at these places but rarely.

My wife just bought me 200 empty coffee bags, they come with a scoop which holds 8g of ground coffee. I tried one a few minutes ago. Absolutly brilliant, using the coffee I buy coffee tastes better that my percolator and quicker. They are strong bags have a drawer string, very good quality, that cost less than 2p each.

So, now fresh coffee available at less than 12p per cup. Whoopie!!!!!!!! No mesh, no mither, no bollocking for me due to coffee grinds in the sink, and even less debris at the bottom of my cup.

I know the issue of not being able to get good coffee but I have been a coffee snob for many years to the point of buying green coffee beans and roasting them myself in a real coffee roasting machine. Getting the correct grind is also important so grinding your own is just as important for excellence of coffee - 92degrees "sparge" with the coffee ground less than two minutes before serving and roasted less than two weeks before grinding - I wonnder if I will end up so pedantic with my brews of different sorts?
Having started brewing for myself and SWMBO she has persuaded me the we buy ground coffee and I sell my coffee roasters (I HAVE two) but I have come to a compramise that I sell one and keep one so that I can roast my own barley.
She did find some coffee bags that were ok and she buys them for when we go on holiday or stay in a B&B so that we have some decent coffee with us.
We do take our own cafetiere on holidays too as many places don't provide one or a coffee percolater.
I can see now that I will be packing a holiday keg as well as the cafetiere - life must go on

Beautiful Dodgies.

The coffee bags, paper, rag cotton draw string, supplied empty with a little scoop that hold 8-9g of ground coffee. You put coffee of your choice in bag, drawstring to close aperture at top of bag, tie to secure.
Put filled coffee bag in cup of near boiling water, stir, leave for 1-2 minutes, squeeze, strain and remove coffee bag. Dispose of coffee bag. Add milk/sugar if you wish, drink cup of fresh filter coffee.
No mess. I had been buying pre filled coffee bags they cost typically 30-35p each, you can make your own for less than 10p. I drink black coffee, easy to take to work, fresh filter coffee available at any time.

I buy the Robert Timms coffee bags here but they are pretty expensive, that’s pretty cool you have found a way to make them much cheaper.

Does the coffee from your homemade bags taste just as good???

I think it tastes better. Probably because I am using a ground coffee that I like. There is a lot more choice of ground coffee in. Half pound or pound bag (single origin Sumatran etc) than the coffee in pre packed individual coffee bags.

This morning,and I think it will become a routine, timed myself 10 minutes I made 24 bags, filled up, tied up done.

I think worth the effort, the cost saving is a benefit, I don't have to go to Shit Tesco or similar to buy the prepacked bags. They do taste better.
