Thanks gaza,
That has been a long time favourite of mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvaEJzoaYZk, never thought to chase the video, so a first for me.
But bugger, you just cost me another 10 minutes of forum tapping time, as I also had to watch the Floyd clip to the end.
But not a bad way to end an evening.

Just started my first cornflake whiskey wash since I've invested in a second fermenter :D
Better get some JD chips so I can make some fake bourbon!
Any recommendations for the best place to get them? Usual go-to is eBay...

Bought my last lot in the B&Q sale £3 a bag , so I bought 8 bags.
Have a look on the net BBQ shops etc.
Cornflake is mega but you do end up with a lot of trub in the
bottom of your fermenter. Last time I blitzed the CF in her
thingy that is not for makeup, think so??? Allowed me to half
the CF.

My personal bane are midges, not mosquitoes.
Due to location.
Every year I use enough DEET to melt my watch strap.
I hate the stuff, but it is the only product that works for me.

Spent what seemed a dogs age re-airating and feeding yeasties to 24 litres of plum wine today.
Now going like a train.
Sadly, the potential rhubarb wine has gone into slumber mode, well earlier than it should.
Hopefully it will wake up again.
Life is a bagatelle!
Tomorrow is busier, bottle a beer, rack another beer, spirit run a neutral.
And a lot more stuff unrelated to imbibing, 'cos sadly I do have to earn a Shekel or two.

The grape harvest is underway on the continent, so the trucks are landing brimming with sweet purple berries. I am off to get mine and fill up my fermentera. A few busy days ahead.

I'm in the same boat as you Jenny, looking for jd chips. The range was sold out when I last looked. To be honest I'm not too bothered. It's really nice as is, after only a couple of weeks off the still. Can't wait to try the next generation with saved backset :D.
I did have a small problem with it tho. After a couple of days it developed a pale blue haze with small particles floating in it that clumped together and then sank to the bottom of demijohn. I think this was lipids. Don't know why they formed for sure. It might have been too much nutrient or the water i proofed it down with was too cold maybe. I didn't go too deep into the tails I turned Urnestine off when I got down to 30% so I don't think it was fuesal oils. Can anyone more knowledgable cast any light on it? I strained it through kitchen towel, it's crystal clear now but I'd like to know what caused it. I normally proof to low 40s but my cf ended up at 38% might that be it? Cheers Bob

Mine sort of did that too but I ran it all again and it was fine after another spirit run:thumbsup:

I would hazzard a guess at Copper salts.
My still sometimes throws some out after a protracted service time.
Sometimes they filter out, sometimes they just go their own way.
They do disappear, and they don't seem to effect the taste of finished spirit.
I don't worry too much, the blue has always gone from finished spirit. :)

@ buffalobob
I reckon it's tails oils, something about proteins that come over in the booze.
dilute to 46% and you dont get them, under 46% you can get them.
This is why "non chill filtered" whiskey is always 46% +

you can do your own chill filtering if so inclined, just stick the bottle in the freezer for a day and then filter through your normal medium of choice.
Personally I just don't look at it if i have bottle where it occurs

My early spirit runs i took down to 30% and always ended up with cloudy distillate.

I stop around 50% nowadays and the rest goes to feints.
Something... something inspiring and Signature related.

If we think they are copper crystal (cnd a simple taste test will determine). The best bet would be to refrigerate/freeze. The coldness will get the most salts to crystallise. Then rack it off/filter before it warms up again ( and dissolves back into the liquid).

I don't know if this is relevant but copper in excess is poisonous. So probably best to try and remove them.
